I hand the excess fabric to him and straighten, anticipation fluttering in my belly at what’s coming next.

Rune gives me a reassuring smile. “You can do it, cher.”

I try not to think about how terrified I am. Not only about this escape plan but the fact that I’m throwing my lot in with three alphas I don’t know.

If this is what it takes to escape Lawrence, then so be it.

I sprint toward Rune. He lowers his cupped hands to account for the size difference between Kylian and me. The second I place my bare foot on his palm, I’m flying.

My hair lashes me in the face as I surge high into the black sky. I’m probably flashing Rune and Cian as my skirt whips up to my hips, but all I want to do is laugh as I stretch up toward the starry night. If I could, I would sketch out the sky I’m soaring up into. Just so I could capture this moment forever.

Hard hands grip my forearms and settle me on the top of the hedge alongside Kylian.

“You good?” he asks.

My heart is still pounding as I nod.

He turns and drops on the other side of the hedge, landing in a half-roll tuck, his knees absorbing the impact.

I stare down at him and gulp. Heights rarely bother me, but now I’m about to jump? They bother me.

“Cher?”

Rune is peering up at me from the other side, frowning. He can probably read my panic.

I firm up my jaw and turn carefully to Kylian, who’s waiting, ready to catch me. There’s a determined look in his gray eyes that says dropping me isn’t on the agenda. And some tiny—probably stupid, don’t think I don’t know how stupid—part of me wants to believe there’s safety in those arms.

I spare a glance back at Lawrence’s fancy, manor-style mansion that wouldn’t look out of place in the French countryside. All the lights are on, and tiny figures are rushing around on the patio. Probably looking for me.

I turn to face the alpha waiting to catch me.

Kylian is a stranger. I don’t trust him. But I trust the look in his eyes that says he will not let me fall.

It makes it easier to release my death grip on my perch and slip from the top of Lawrence’s hedge and into Kylian’s waiting arms.

Chapter5

Everleigh

I’m sitting in the back of Pack Ashe’s black Mercedes limo, and it smells of expensive leather and delicious alpha pheromones.

I can’t quite believe that fifteen minutes ago, Kylian caught me in his arms, set me on my feet, and told me let’s go.

And I went.

I didn’t even try to pull my hand from his as he led us away at a jog.

Cian and Rune met us down the road from Lawrence’s house, and I climbed right into the limo. Just like that. Me. Running from one alpha and immediately getting into a limo with three others.

I ask myself if I didn’t crack my head open trying to scale Lawrence’s hedge, and I’m not lying half-dead in his garden.

But I’m not.

I’m sitting in a car with three big alphas.

The limo is spacious, don’t get me wrong, but a football field wouldn’t be nearly spacious enough to separate them from me.

So far, none of them have questioned why I’m glued to the door with my hand wrapped around the handle, ready to throw it open. As they sit tucked as far away as they can in this enclosed space, they must have questions. I know I would.
