“And then?” I ask, my mouth dry.

She glances at me, raising a dark brow. “Do you really want me to tell you?”

No. I don’t.

But I nod because I have a feeling the not knowing will be even worse.

“An alpha buys you. They have special rooms where the buyers take their new purchase, and if they like you well enough, they take you with them.”

“And if they don’t like you?” I whisper, licking my dry lips. “What then?”

“They have other rooms like this where you’ll stay until the next auction. They happen every week. Friday. They trade you or they put you in an auction. Depends what they think you’re worth.”

I was wrong. I think I would have preferred not to know any of this.

“And no one knows what’s happening here?” I whisper.

“These are the most important men in the city, and they’ve been doing this probably longer than both of us have been alive. What do you think?”

I think they’ve been playing this same game for decades, and they will keep on playing it until someone stops them.

More sweat forms on my brow. I wipe it with the back of my palm, but there’s nothing I can do about my omega pheromones that are growing stronger. A sign my heat is well and truly on its way.

“Do you know who they are?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Some. Not all. They call their club the Asylum.”

My brow wrinkles in confusion. “The Asylum?”

“Men who have everything.Alphaswho have everything.”

What do you get a man who has everything?

An omega.

They’ve created a farm—a breeding, auction, trading farm—to pick who they want, trade who they don’t, and make money doing it.

“Animals,” I whisper. “They’re animals.”

“No.” Resa’s voice is hard. “They are monsters. And none of them deserve to breathe.”

Chapter44

Cian

It’s been fifteen minutes since someone Everleigh mistook for Della likely lured her out into the garden. We don’t have security cameras at the back of the house, since no one but us knows about the back gate. When we get Everleigh back, that’s going to change.

I eye Della over our big, round office desk. I’d known they weren’t related, at least biologically, but I’d expected some similarities between them given they grew up together. In appearance and personality, they’re nearly polar opposites.

And I think.

“We should go to Lawrence’s dad.” Kylian is pacing, the need to act biting at him. “Or try Lawrence’s house just in case that is where he took her.”

Della, leaning on the wall beside the window, scowls as she shakes her head. “He wasn’t at the house when I left. Probably because he was already here waiting to grab Everleigh.”

“So he might be there now.” Kylian swings to the doorway.

“Wait—” Rune calls out, moving to stand from the desk.
