As he prowls toward me in ripped jeans, a faded black T-shirt, and bare feet, I remember what Hali told me about his sad childhood and the fact he’s a killer.

But my feelings toward him haven’t changed. I don’t look at him and want to shy away.

I look at him and remember all the things he’s done to make me feel safe, comfortable, and how it always feels like home when I’m in his arms.

“Then why do I get the sense something is wrong?” I quietly ask when he stops a foot away from me.

Silence reigns for several seconds, and then Cian says, “We found your mom.”

My mom is dead. There’s no way she could be alive. They found her body or some other horrifying thing about her, and they don’t know how to tell me.

I clear my throat. “Resa said she was having her heat in a free clinic when an alpha took her.”

The corners of Cian’s eyes pinch. “Did she say which clinic?”

I run a hand through my hair, annoyed at myself for not thinking to ask something so obvious. “I didn’t think to ask. At the time, I wasn’t… someone injected me with something to trigger my heat before the auction, so I wasn’t as clearheaded as I should have been.”

“And what else did someone do to you?” Kylian asks with a bite in his voice.

I give him a faint smile. “Nothing that matters now. Anyway, Resa said that she thought the members of the Asylum had been taking advantage of omegas for a long time. I don’t want to think about how many omegas they hurt and how many they killed.”

“Everleigh…” Rune is pushing himself to his feet. Probably getting ready to round the table and give me a hug that will make me fall apart.

My eyes fill with tears. I turn to leave before I start crying and make them think I’m not grateful for everything they’ve done for me. “She’s dead. I knew it a while ago, and it’s okay. I mean, it’s not okay. What I’m trying to say is that you don’t need to think of a way to—”

“She’s alive,” Cian softly interrupts me. “We found your mom, and she’s alive. We can take you to her.”

“Now if you want,” Rune adds.

My legs give way beneath me.

Suddenly, Kylian is right in front of me, hands grasping my arms as he helps me into a chair that Rune pulls out for me.

“Easy now, cher,” Rune says.

My legs are jelly, and my brain is the same way as I meet Cian’s dark green gaze. “I thought I heard something impossible.”

A smile ghosts across his lips. “No, little omega, you heard right.”

I stare at him, managing to draw just enough air into my lungs to whisper, “This is a dream.”

Rune’s smile is sad as he slides a hand around the nape of my neck and drops a kiss on the top of my head. “It’s real. How about we prove it?”

I brush the tears from my eyes as I take them all in. Cian, Rune, and Kylian crowded around me, close, but still giving me room to breathe.

My gaze settles on Kylian. “But there’s something else. You didn’t want to tell me this.”

Kylian slowly nods. “For a couple of reasons. Cian?”

Cian drops into a crouch in front of my chair and takes my hand, squeezing it. I brace myself for what’s coming. He wouldn’t be squeezing my hand like this if he wasn’t preparing to tell me something that will hurt.

“She’s in a private clinic. She’s been there all this time—decades—and from what little information we could get from the clinic, she hasn’t spoken one word in that time,” Cian says.

A little of my excitement dims, and I focus on all the papers on the desk. She’s alive, but will she want to see me? Will she even remember having me?

I spot a picture of a two-story gray house before Rune rises and perches on the edge of the desk, blocking my view. “The staff were being difficult about sharing information,” Rune explains. “It took some legal threats to get them to be more forthcoming.”

“You called your attorney?”
