Kylian and Rune step in front of him, body blocking him. As if this were a choreographed dance, Cian starts escorting Mom and me around them to the parking lot. Did they know he would be here to move this quick?

“Get out of my way. I’m here to see my daughter,” Sloane orders.

I stop.

Daughter.

I let the word roll around in my head. My jaw tightens as fury heats every drop of blood in my body.

Since when have I ever been a daughter to him? More significantly, when hasheever been a father tome?

I turn to Mom. “Can you wait for me in the car?”

She doesn’t look like she wants to let go of my hand.

I offer her what hopefully looks like a reassuring smile and not me gritting my teeth because I can still hear Sloane demanding Kylian and Rune move. “It’s okay, I’ll be fine. I just need to do something.”

“The limo,” Cian clarifies. “She can wait for you in the limo.”

She darts a rapid glance at Sloane, then at Cian before she rushes over to the limo, sliding in the back. All while keeping as much distance as possible from Cian.

The moment she’s in the back of the limo, the driver closes the door behind her. I swing around and let my reassuring smile fall away. “Rune, Kylian, can you move aside, please?”

Kylian peers over his shoulder and steps aside. “Rune.”

Rune gives me his own appraising look before he too steps aside. Cian remains by my side, as if for support.

Sloane moves toward me. “Everleigh, I loved Olive and—”

“You don’t know the first thing about love,” I cut him off without hesitation. “I hate you for what you did. I willneverforgive you for it, and I never want to see you again.”

He lifts his hand toward me. “Everleigh, I—”

“No,” I interrupt. “I don’t want to hear it. And don’t youdaretouch me!”

“I let Olive name you. If that isn’t a sign—”

I literally start shaking at that point.

Never in my life, in my dreams, my nightmares… anywhere did Ieverbelieve I would lose the ability to speak. I struggle to form a word, let alone a sentence. My body vibrates with rage. My eyes burn, and I feel like I could without any effort at all, put my hands around this man’s neck and squeeze all the life out of him.

I step up to the man who is supposed to be my father but who, in reality, is a monster. This close, it’s impossible to miss his alpha pheromones. Raw leather, tobacco, and cinnamon. I think I will hate that combination of scents for the rest of my life.

“Youlether? You took advantage of her during her heat is what you did, and when you decided you wanted more, you stole her from her life and ripped us apart. And because that wasn’t enough, you tossed her in this clinic and forgot about her. There is a word for people like you, and that word is evil. Pure fucking evil.”

“You don’t understand. I—”

“No!” He falls silent.

I take a step closer, nearly right into his face.

I was always quiet, always bookish, always content to stay on my own, drawing in the garden or laughing with Della. When I spoke, it was through my art.

It was always easier than hunting out the right words to say.

Now I knowexactlywhat I want to say.

I’m speaking to a powerful alpha, one of the wealthiest in the city. I do not feel like an omega, small, submissive… weak.
