I feel like I could take him on in a fight and win.

“You don’t know what love is. Your version of love disgusts me.Youdisgust me. You deserve to be in a prison or in a grave.”

And I turn and walk away.

A hand closes around my arm. “Everleigh, I—”

“If you want that hand back, you’ll take it off her right fucking now.” I barely recognize Kylian’s voice.

But it does the job. The hand is gone. Kylian is there instead, stroking my arm as if determined to brush away Sloane’s touch. “Are you okay?” The corners of his eyes are creased with concern.

I nod, wanting to give him a reassuring smile and failing. Now that the rage has burned itself out of me, my knees are shaking and I’m lightheaded. I need to sit down before I fall down.

“Let’s go,” Cian says, leading me away from the man who will never be my father.

He walks me right up to the limo, opens the door himself, and smiles. “Devin knows where to go. The rest of us will be right behind you, okay?”

I’d thought we were going back to the mansion. Cian is making me think that’s not where we’re going at all. “But—”

“Everleigh.” Mom snags my hand and tugs. Her face is white, and she is very deliberately not facing my way. If she were to do that, she would see the man who caged her. And Cian. She would also see him.

Not wanting her to continue to suffer through a confrontation when she’s already suffered enough, I slide into the back of the limo.

Cian slams the door shut behind me, and as the driver pulls out of the parking lot, I spot Rune and Kylian with their back to me, facing Sloane. I don’t know what they’re saying. Whatever it is, I’m not sure Sloane is even listening. He’s staring at me, and his eyes are hungry.

I turn away and hope I never have to see that man for as long as I live.

Leaning my head against Mom’s, I try to make sense of this new change in my life. During the drive, Mom is quiet. I’m so focused on what just happened and what will happen next that I blink in surprise when the driver pulls up in front of a pretty, two-story gray house.

The same house as the picture on Rune’s desk.

I stare out at it. “Wait, why are we here?”

The driver turns around in his seat. This limo isn’t like Lawrence’s, with a black tinted glass dividing the back from the front. He flashes me a warm smile, afriendlysmile, and says, “Rune, Cian, and Ky will explain when they get here.”

“Everleigh, what’s going on?” Mom asks, her hand tightening around mine.

“I don’t know,” I murmur, twisting around in my seat at the sound of an approaching car. It’s a quiet suburban street, so when I spot the navy Mercedes, I know exactly who’ll be driving it. Rune. Cian said they’d be right behind us, and it turns out that they were.

I wait in my seat for the navy Mercedes to pull to a stop and for Rune, Cian, and Kylian to climb out and head toward us.

Before he can reach the door, I push it open, and Mom follows, still tightly gripping my hand.

“Rune? Whose house is this?” I ask.

Mom is still sticking like glue to my side as Rune pulls out a set of keys from his back pocket and offers it to me. “Yours.”

I blink at them, confused. “I don’t understand.”

“Take the keys, cher,” Rune says.

Not knowing what to do, I take them. “My house?”

Cian nods. “Your house.”

I turn to look at the house, the keys in my hand, and then back at the three alphas standing feet away. I’m not sure how I feel about this.

This is what I wanted. A home, a place to start fresh. Mom. A future. And yet, it feels like they’re throwing me away. Like they don’t want me and that… hurts.
