He doesn’t respond.

“Kylian…” I sigh.

“We can always knock all four houses together and make one big one,” he suggests. “You know, if you ever decide you need more space.”

Briefly, I close my eyes.

Four houses.

Four.

They didn’t stop at buying the houses on either side. It sounds like they went one further. I don’t know why they would, but…

“Thanks,” I say. “You didn’t have to do that for me. But thanks.”

He falls quiet. So do I.

It’s late. He probably has things to do, and I’m usually in bed by now. Yet, neither of us hangs up. There’s something reassuring about listening to him breathe. “I saw what you did today,” I say quietly. “The other families could cause trouble for you.”

“They could,” Kylian agrees. “And they’d soon regret it. You’ve been drawing again, little omega?”

I hesitate about answering. “A little.”

The only things I seem to want to draw lately are three certain alphas I can’t stop thinking and dreaming about.

“Well, if you decide there are any fantasies of me and you that you want to sketch and send my way, I won’t say no.”

He’s smiling, so I’m not sure how serious he is.

I get up to peel the drapes away from the window so I can see the navy car parked halfway down the road. The Ashes are billionaires. They have more money than most of the big families in the city, so they could afford the best private security in the city. Yet I like to think it’s Kylian out there, watching over Mom and me.

It won’t be, but I like to imagine it is.

“It’s nice to hear your voice,” I say. Better than nice. I’m struggling to motivate myself to hang up.

“Well, I’m always here whenever you want to talk.”

I nod. “I better go.”

“Did you call the therapist we found for your mom?” Kylian asks. “She can talk with you as well if you need it.”

“I’ll think about it. Mom doesn’t believe doctors have her best interest in mind.” I hesitate before I add, “Alphas too.”

“This one is the best for post-traumatic recovery in the country. Give your mom all the info and she can do her own research. This doctor has no ties to any of the families in the city. Cian made damn sure of it. She’s a beta, doesn’t live locally, but she can do home visits if your mom wants her to. Or she can do sessions via Zoom, phone call, letter, or carrier pigeon. Whatever your mom needs.”

I smile faintly at the thought of Mom and a therapist conducting sessions through carrier pigeons. Maybe I shouldn’t smile. If anyone could make it happen, Cian, Kylian, and Rune could. “I’m sure he did.”

We fall silent for a beat, and then he asks me, “So what are you wearing?”

I splutter with laughter. “You are not turning this into phone sex, Kylian Sutton.”

“We could turn it into real sex if you wanted.”

I’m smiling as I shake my head, turning away from the window. “For that to happen, you’d have to be here, and you’re clean across town.”

“I bet I could get there sooner than you were expecting.” His tone is thoughtful.

I pause mid-step, my eyes returning to the window as a thought races through my mind. “You’re not… uh, it’s notyouin the car outside my house, is it?”
