“Everleigh,” he says simply. “I’m the owner of a billion-dollar business. I have more meetings in a week than I’ll ever be comfortable with. Time is in short supply, and I would never willingly give it up for anything that wasn’t an absolute top priority.”

When he puts it like that…

“Ignore me. I just thought…”Something stupid.

Why would he be sitting in a car in the middle of the night watching over me when he could pay someone to do it?

“I was being cryptic,” he interrupts. “But there are important things in my life that I would never pass off to anyone else. I need you to know that.”

For a little while, I thought I was one of those important things. Maybe I still am. I keep expecting them to call or text and tell me they love me and want me to stay.

But they haven’t.

I’m not sure what I would even say, especially with my promise to Mom to stay away from all alphas. But I miss them. I miss them so much my heart hasn’t felt the same since they got in Rune’s car and drove away. I’m sure it never will again.

“So you hired security to watch Mom and me,” I say as I make my way up to bed, switching the lights off and the security alarm on as I go.

“We did. We have two teams. One we’ve worked with before. The other doesn’t have as much experience, but they are extremely motivated.”

I crawl into bed, yawning. I still need to get up and brush my teeth, but I’ve been waking up so frequently in the night, I’ll talk with Kylian now and get ready for bed later. “Please tell me you’re not paying them a lot of money because you’ve spent more than enough on me already.”

“I won’t. And please tell me I didn’t just hear you crawl into bed because I think I might have to turn this phone sex into real sex.”

Smiling, I snuggle into the sheets, trying to get comfortable. I’ll burrow into my closet nest for the latter part of the night, but right now, I want to snuggle in bed as I talk to Kylian. “I thought we agreed this wasn’t phone sex.”

“And it’s not.” He pauses. “I could tell you what I’m wearing. My socks are gray with—”

Laughing, I cut him off. “Stop. Are you seriously telling me what socks you’re wearing? You’re supposed to…”

His voice is husky when he says, “I’m supposed to startwhereexactly? Maybe you could tell me and I could… start.”

This is not happening. It can’t if I want to have even a second of sleep tonight. So I chicken out, and I don’t say a word.

“I told you one of my fantasies,” he says. “I think I’d like to hear one of yours. Maybe you could tell me what you’d like me to do to you.”

I roll onto my back and stare up at the ceiling. “Because you’re lazy and need motivation?”

Or because you want me to call you a good boy?

His response is surprisingly serious. “Because you’re you and I will always want to please you.”

“You’re not sounding like a lazy person,” I whisper.

You sound like someone I could fall in love with if I wasn’t sure I hadn’t already.

“Probably not. Maybe I just hadn’t found the right person to motivate me until now.”

I struggle to summon a response. I want to be with him. With them all, but it’s not that straightforward. Mom is still broken from what was done to her. I don’t know when she’ll get better, and I can’t leave her until she is. Not when we’ve just found each other.

And that promise… why did I promise something that’s shattering my heart?

“Sleep, little omega,” Kylian quietly orders as if he can sense my inner turmoil.

“Kylian?”

“Anything,” he says a split second later.

I smile. “What kind of a response is that?”
