Chapter10

Rune

Everleigh is halfway down the stairs, her eyes lingering on the Renoir, when her scent hits me.

Sweet vanilla, rich coconut, buttery soft, and teeth-achinglyperfect.

The friendly smile I hoped would ease her anxiety about alphas slides down my face.

As if she feels the intensity of my gaze on her, she turns.

I grab Cian by one arm and Kylian by the other and drag both back into one of the more formal reception rooms, speaking in a hush. “Did you—”

“Yup.” Cian interrupts, more shocked than I’ve ever heard him. “And did you—”

“I did,” Kylian says, breathing hard. “I fucking did.”

We fall silent, staring at each other as Everleigh’s slow steps continue down the stairs.

I move Cian and Kylian farther away, not stopping until we reach the glass sliding door that leads out to the garden.

Stunned.

I have never been so stunned in my life.

“It’s her,” I whisper. “She’sour scent match—our omega—and we agreed to let her go. We can’t let her go. Everleigh isours.”

No other scent would have so much of an effect on us.

“She hates alphas,” Kylian hisses. “Wants nothing to do with any of them. We can’t tell her.”

Cian appears as serious and calm on the surface as he always is. The way he keeps glancing back at the doorway with his nostrils flared tells me he’s fighting his instincts as hard as I am.

The way we all are.

Those instincts are screaming at me to gather Everleigh into my arms, drag her scent into my lungs, and kill anything that dares to hurt her.

I have other instincts as well. Baser, primal ones that want to fuck, to bite, to claim.

I beat back those instincts. After the way Lawrence hurt her, she’s not even close to being ready to accept any alpha in her bed. Probably not even touching her.

Not for a long while. Maybe not ever.

But she’s ours.

I shake my head. “We need to tell her. It doesn’t mean we have to take things further than talking. But she needs to know. Eventually, she’ll realize we’re nothing like Lawrence. She will want us back.”

I swing around to do just that.

Cian and Kylian grab me by both arms, dragging me back before I can take one step.

“Bad idea,” Kylian whispers. “She willnotwant us back. The only way she would want us back is if we stop being alphas, and last I heard, there’s no undoing what’s written in your DNA.”

“We can’t lie to her about this.” I swing around, shaking their hands off me.

I make it two steps this time before they haul me back.

“She’s eventually going to notice we like the way she smells as much as she likes the way we smell.” Cian drags his gaze from the door to raise his brow. “And she does.”
