“I was thinking about decorating the tables at the garden party with lilacs instead of pink roses,” I say. “It might make a nice change.”

“Roses are traditional, Everleigh.” Lawrence’s smile widens. No one would spot the disapproval he hides in his deep blue eyes, but I see it. I always see it. “Everyone will expect roses.”

And God help us if we don’t give people what they expect.

I return his indulgent smile with an embarrassed one. “Of course, you’re right. Silly of me to forget something so easy to remember.”

Omegas are rare. Omegas are precious. And omegas cannot survive on their own. Three truths everyone in the city learns. I was an ordinary beta a year ago, but even I knew those truths, though I didn’t believe they would ever apply to me.

I was wrong.

Like most girls, I lost hours of my day, dreaming of being the main character in a fairy tale. And one day, it happened.

Lawrence made me a princess in the eyes of the city, but my prince turned out to be the villain of my story. Now it's time for me to save myself and swear off princes forever.

I spot the waiter, a beta—dressed in Lawrence’s blue staff uniform—like all the others, doing a slow circuit around the perimeter of the room. I subtly nod his way, and he instantly veers toward me. He carries a silver tray, loaded down with glasses of red wine. Other waiters circulate with white wine, champagne, or tiny French canapés.

I wanthim. All night, I’ve waited to catchhiseye.

Smiling at Lawrence, I say quietly, “I think my shoe strap just came undone. Can you help me to a side room before I topple over?”

Lawrence parts his lips as I take a step and stumble, knowing I have to time things just…

Perfect.

Lawrence moves to catch me, as I knew he would. At no point does he think to look behind him when I fall heavily into him, forcing him back a step.

But I do.

I most definitely do.

Chapter2

Rune

“What about her?” I nod at a pretty brunette in a green dress with big, puffy sleeves.

I eye those sleeves as I raise my whiskey to my lips.

If someone tossed her in a pool, would she float? Or would she sink?

Before Kylian and Cian say a word, I already have a problem with her. Her face is fine, her body as well, even the dress isn’t as bad as I’m making it out to be.

But her scent…

My nose wrinkles.

Why I’m offering her up as a possibility is a mystery even to me.

Boredom most likely.

“Smells like engine grease.” Cian yawns as he rakes his dark green eyes across the Wentworths’ ballroom. “You must be coming down with something, Rune, to miss a smell like that.”

It’s not bad, like I said. Just not… right. At least, not right for us.

There’ll be an alpha somewhere who’ll take one sniff of that omega with the puffy sleeves and knock every man and woman down to get to her.

Cian is right, though. Iamcoming down with something all right. I’d say it was a violent case of blue balls if I wasn’t positive it was something else. Can a person miss a thing they’ve never had? Because the thing I’m missing is our omega. As the years pass by, I’m getting less and less hopeful we’ll ever find her.
