Page 4 of Runaway Omega

Settling has never been on the agenda for any of us. In lifeandin business. We didn’t turn Ashe Investments into a billion-dollar company by settling.

But finding the perfect omega for us? The onewe’dknock down anyone inourpath to get to? It’s a task that’s proving impossible.

There aren’t many alphas who share an omega the way we do. At least not without a beta or two to add balance to a household of dominant alphas. When we found each other, none of us expected it. But we’ve always been stronger together than apart. And our scents just… gel. It’s how packs form. Through scent.

Across Lawrence Wentworth’s ballroom, I meet the eyes of a redheaded omega. She lowers her gaze at once and wilts away. Their submissive natures either make them too terrified to approach on their own, or their pushy mothers drag them over.

Born and raised in Louisiana, I’m used to pushy Southern mamas. But I’ve never seen pushy like this. These omega mothers would stake their daughters at the foot of a mountain if they’d heard there was a wealthy alpha inside. Probably wouldn’t matter if he was a dragon or a man.

I frown as I watch her go. “You’re being dramatic. She didn’t smell that bad.”

Movement near the center of the ballroom catches my eye.

Lawrence twirls his slender white-blonde-haired omega.

My nose twitches again, for another reason this time. Tart cherry, rum, and pepper. I cock my head. “Did he dunk her in his pheromones?”

Kylian sips from his whiskey as he props up the same wall we’ve been propping up most of the night. “Smells like.”

None of us could miss Lawrence’s claiming bite on Everleigh Wentworth’s throat or the possessive hand he’s placed on her lower back. If we’d somehow missed those markers she was his, we couldn’t have overlooked the extent to which he scent marked her.

I’ve never seen an alpha go to such lengths to mark a woman as off-limits. How a man could have so much, yet be so damned insecure, is a mystery to me.

Shaking my head, I return to the reason we’re here tonight.

I focus on a fragile blonde hovering near a hawklike older woman. “She doesn’t smell so bad.”

She does.

Like cheese left out too long. Sweaty and warm. It’s not a nice thing to say. But it’s the truth, and I’ve always valued truth over lies.

Cian places his palm over my forehead.

I glance over at him. “What are you doing?”

“Checking you aren’tactuallycoming down with something.” His voice is dry.

Snorting, I slap his hand away. “Coming here wasn’t a good idea.”

“That’s desperation for you.” He yawns.

I hum in agreement.

Seven years ago, we built the perfect home that felt like a sanctuary to us, hoping it would make a sanctuary for our omega as well. We even found the perfect housekeeper to look after it—and us.

All that’s missing is our omega.

Unless we want to spend the rest of our lives hitting up beta bars when the itch to fuck grows too loud to ignore, none of us can settle. Or want to. We want the real deal. The one woman just for us. No other omega will do.

My eyes sweep across the packed, swelteringly hot ballroom, the men in tuxes, the women in pastel-colored floor-length gowns.

Turning Ashe Investments into a success took everything we had. No day was ever easy. It was a grind, make no mistake about it.

But a life like that, worklike that, takes its toll on you. I’m not the only one who’s questioning what it’s all for when we go home from our business meetings exhausted. When we make another ten, twenty, thirty million and it adds no value to our life, and when we’re missing the piece that will make us feel whole.

As time goes on, all we can focus on is finding our omega.

Cian, Kylian, and I are all alphas. We’re probably the richest in the room. Yet, we’re not conversing with the other alpha CEOs and titans of industry, or forging connections in Lawrence’s whiskey room.
