His words distract her from running. For now.

It also confirms Kylian and Cian were right. If I told her we were scent matches, she would run right out the door. No hesitation. Not the usual reaction to what would ordinarily be a dream occasion, but Everleigh won’t be eager to have anything to do withanyalpha. Scent match or not.

So we say nothing for now, convince her we’re nothing like Lawrence, and once we’ve won her trust, thenwe tell her.

And then we’re in the entryway, turning away from Everleigh as I lead the way to the dining room, leaving her to follow.

“Who are Hali and Nancy?” Everleigh’s voice is soft, still wary, but less so. Maybe because she doesn’t have three big alphas bearing down on her.

And her scent…

Fuck, having her under this roof with us is going to be a big fucking problem. I’m already struggling with instincts demanding I claim her. From the bulges prodding the front of Cian’s and Kylian’s pants, I’m not the only one.

“Nancy is our housekeeper. She runs the house for us. Hali is her daughter,” I say.

“Hali was the mouthy one knocking on your door this morning.” Kylian grins.

“Betas?” Everleigh asks, slowly following, though she must already know the answer.

For an alpha to have alpha or omega staff wouldn’t work out in the long run. Our scents are too distracting to each other. And no alpha could or would serve others.

Just inside the dining room, I glance over at her to confirm she’s still following, hunching my shoulders to appear smaller. I’m a big guy. No amount of hunching anything is going to change that. But I try for Everleigh. “And family. Let’s show you how we do breakfast around here, cher, and we’ll tell you all about them.”

Chapter11

Everleigh

During the night, the dining room was ordinary. Elegant, but ordinary. During the day?

It captivates.

Bright streams of sunlight bounce off the polished, warm hardwood floors. Heavy, deep orange drapes have been pushed back to reveal delicate lacy curtains that cover the floor-to-ceiling windows that take up nearly one entire wall.

The dining table has been covered with a pale orange tablecloth, set for four people. I take in the heaving dishes of scrambled eggs, hash browns, pancakes, bacon, and sausage, and have to look away before I start drooling over myself.

“You were talking about killing someone,” I say, keeping my eyes on Rune. He’s the biggest alpha, and therefore, the one I need to watch the closest. A punch to the jaw from him won’t leave a bruise. I would go to sleep and not wake up again.

There’s a split second of tense silence when Kylian and Cian glance at Rune too.

Rune flashes me a smile. “Just a work annoyance, cher.”

I’m sure I’m only imagining it when Cian’s and Kylian’s shoulders relax. “Work?”

Kylian grins at me as he picks up a plate. “Investment can be a cutthroat business. Did you want some of everything?”

I glance at the table heaving with food. “Um…”

“Course you do.” Kylian starts scooping food onto the plate. More food than I can eat. More food than Rune could probably eat.

“Juice?” Cian asks me, drawing my gaze.

“Please,” I say.

As Cian fills a crystal glass with orange juice, Kylian isstillfilling my plate. By the time I realize I should have been stopping him from adding more, it’s too late. He sets the heaping plate down on the table and flashes me a grin. “Dig in.”

And then he picks up his own plate and helps himself. They all do.

I watch them, still hovering closer to the door than the table. Della would laugh in my face if she were to see me now. Like a fearful mouse not sure which thing will get it eaten.
