I push myself to my feet. “I think Lawrence Wentworth is used to getting exactly what he wants, and he won’t care who he tramples over to get it. Let’s take a look for this mystery woman, Ky. Nancy, get a bag packed and ready for you and Hali. If things go south, I want you both out of here. Okay?”

With visible reluctance, she nods. “Okay.”

Chapter16

Everleigh

Hali reminds me so much of Della that maybe that’s why I find it so easy to let go of my tension and allow her to bully me into trying on all the clothes.

The lilac dress that caught my eye is pretty, but it doesn’t suit me with my blonde hair and paler skin. I make Hali try it on instead. With her rich, dark hair and olive skin, it looks like it belongs on her.

I spend a surprisingly enjoyable couple of hours with Hali trying on clothes, laughing at her inappropriate jokes, and failing at not seeming too interested when she tells me about the small acts of kindness the alphas have shown her and her mom over the years.

As Hali did my nails for me, she told me that her mom didn’t miss one school event. Not one. She had a house to run for three busy alphas, but they always gave Nancy time off to be there for Hali.

Lawrence and his friends only cared about their needs. If the servants in his house had lives of their own, I doubt he let them live them if it intruded on his wants.

We’re finishing folding the clothes into the dresser—even the ones that should be hung up—when Hali holds up a silky blue scarf and motions for me to turn around. “I’ve been itching to tie this in your hair since I saw you in the blue dress.”

I let her, her excitement infectious.

When she’s wound the blue scarf in my hair and nudged me in front of a mirror, I smile at my reflection.

I’m a world away from Lawrence’s perfect omega. I’m me… well, as close to the Everleigh Jackson I was before he got his hands on me.

The blue midi sundress is loose around my calves, the fabric a cool linen, the cut relaxed. I’m not wearing a scrap of makeup, and Hali has tied my hair in a loose ponytail that still allows strands of my blonde hair to frame my face.

And I have a smile in my eyes.

Everleigh Wentworth rarely smiled with anything but her teeth.

“Thanks, Hali, I had fun,” I say, and I mean it. Truly.

“Hali?” a female voice calls up the stairs. “You ready to go for dinner?”

“Yeah, Mom. Be right there,” Hali calls back. She draws me in a hug and whispers in my ear, “Seven fifteen tomorrow morning. Be at the top of the staircase.”

I blink at her as she heads for the door. “What? Why?”

“Just be there. You can thank me later.” She waves as she leaves, pulling the door closed behind her.

I stare after her, bemused. Shaking my head, I gather all the empty bags from my new clothes, courtesy of the three alphas downstairs, whom I need to thank.

I stand in the entryway of the dining room, frowning.

A white cloth covers the dark wood, but there is no cutlery on it. Or even glasses of water. And I can’t smell any food.

So why did Rune call me to say that dinner was ready?

“You look beautiful, little omega,” a male voice says.

I twist around.

Kylian is leaning against the wall beside a closed door, down near the back of the house, with powerful arms folded over an equally powerful chest.

His steel-gray eyes dance over me, lingering on the silk scarf in my hair, the thin straps of my dress, and my breasts. His expression doesn’t change, but I know he didn’t miss my lack of a bra.
