He needs feeding too. “Starved for what?” I still ask.

His gaze sweeps over me. “For what only one little omega can give me. Eat now. You need more, tell me, and it’s yours.”

As he swings around and begins cleaning, I lift my spoon to my mouth and devour bite after bite of the most incredible meal I’ve ever tasted in my life. But I never take my eyes off the man who made it for me.

A man who says he is starving and only I can satisfy him.

I don’t believe him, but I want to.

I want to.

Chapter21

Rune

With my brain thick with the memory of Everleigh closing her soft, pink lips around my spoon, focusing on work is impossible.

Get that thought outta your head. It was your étouffée she was hungry for. Not you.

Easy words to think, impossible words to believe when I have the memory of her mint-green eyes, dark with arousal, etched in my mind.

For a time—maybe not a lot of time, but for a time—it was me she wanted. Me she needed.

When Hali knocks briskly on the office door, I yank my gaze from a promising startup’s profit forecast I’ve spent the last two hoursnotreading.

Before I can tell her to come in, she barges right in. Not an unusual occurrence when it comes to Hali. I told Everleigh that Hali and Nancy are family, and they are.

This time, more than any other time, Hali’s sudden interruption is a benefit. She stopped me from shoving this report aside and going upstairs for a cold shower or a quick, hard pump of my cock. Maybe that would have been enough to deal with this painful erection. I doubt it but maybe.

“Everleigh’s sleeping in the closet,” Hali announces.

I blink at her. “Huh?”

What the fuck have you done to your wits, Rune Fontenot? ’Cause there’s no trace of them in your head.

Cian and Kylian lift their gazes from their laptops, similarly confused. Their mission to track down Everleigh’s mom and sister has been hitting roadblock after roadblock.

Cian will find Everleigh’s sister. I have no doubt about that. And if Everleigh’s real mom is still alive, he’ll find her too.

“What did you say?” I’m still trying to get that soft hum of pleasure Everleigh made out of my head.

Hali nudges the door closed and walks over to the window that overlooks the garden, crossing her arms as she leans on it. “I went to take her the new clothes you told me to get her. She was going to try a dress on in the closet, and I saw she had a bunch of your clothes on the closet floor. Oh, and her bed doesn’t look like it’s been slept in.”

We all stare at Hali, processing her words.

“She’s been sleeping on thefloor?” It takes serious effort to silence my roar. I almost don’t manage it.

Hali glances out the window before promptly spinning around and heading right back for the office door. “I’ve convinced Everleigh to go swimming with me this afternoon, so you have maybe a couple of hours to do something about it.”

And then she walks out, shutting the door after her.

We all turn to study each other.

“That closet doesn’t have carpet,” Cian says.

Kylian frowns. “You think I don’t know that?”

We study each other a little longer.
