I don’t know how many there are in the city, but I doubt they could all be open to corruption.

Any Omega Institute affiliated clinics require an omega register with them versus the free clinics, and not all omegas want to do that. I’m not sure who else runs the other clinics in the city. Maybe some for profit? I’ve never wondered until now.

“But an omega wouldn’t know which one was safe and which was not until an alpha slipped into her room while she was in her heat, would she?” Everleigh asks.

Is she thinking about where she would go to ride out her heat if heat clinics aren’t safe?

An omega’s pheromones are potent, a lure no alpha can ignore for long. She would have to be somewhere closed off, somewhere that potent lure couldn’t tempt an alpha to her room. I don’t know how many places like that exist in the city, but I doubt there are many.

Because if an alpha found an omega in heat, there’s no guarantee he’d be able to stop himself from taking advantage of her.

It’s happened before. Probably many times before.

Those free clinics are supposed to give omegas a safe haven. Not to act as a goldfish bowl for wealthy alphas to scoop up victims who aren’t in a state to fight back.

Everleigh gets up. “I need fresh air.”

“I’ll go with you.” Kylian straightens from the wall.

She shakes her head. “Alone.” Her eyes settle first on Kylian, then Rune, and finally on me, and her expression is sad. “You’ve all done everything you said you would, and I appreciate you giving me a safe place to stay. But right now, it’s too hard to be around any alpha. I just need to be alone.”

Without waiting for a response, she walks out.

We wait for Everleigh to leave, and then Rune stands up, rage hardening his face, making him almost unrecognizable. “We need to stop this. Yesterday.”

Kylian nods, eyes fixed on the doorway Everleigh stepped through. “We need to kill anyone and everyone responsible.”

“And we need to find out how far this goes. If one of Lawrence’s friends is involved, he might be as well, and so might others from that party,” I say.

“So we need proof,” Rune says. “And we protect the omegas since clearly, the Institute climbed into these alphas’ pockets so long ago they forgot what their purpose for existing is. Who knows what the Council thinks, or if they even care?”

“It’s time we reminded them,” I agree.

“We need more suppressants for Everleigh,” Kylian says, still glowering as he focuses on me.

I nod. “I’ll get more. The dealer was already asking more questions than I wanted to answer. I can find another one, but it’s going to take time.”

“Well, we’re going to have to risk it,” Rune says. “Everleigh needs them.”

She’s not ready to trust us to help her through her heat, and her leaving now is too dangerous. Where would she go to ride out her heat when we don’t know which clinics would be safe for her to use?

“We don’t have a lot of time,” Rune says, reading my mind.

“I know,” I agree. “So we’re going to have to work fast.”

Chapter29

Everleigh

I’m sitting on the edge of the pool, kicking my feet in the cool water, when Kylian drops beside me and does the same.

He lifts his arm and tucks me close. And because I can’t seem to keep my distance from these alphas or turn away from their delicious scents, I lean into him. “We’ll get them.”

“You’re going to a lot of trouble on account of me,” I say, still kicking my feet.

Being with Kylian is manageable now, if not easy. The suppressants have dulled some of my needs and wants but not all. I thought they would be more effective, but maybe this batch isn’t the strong kind. I guess that’s what happens when you buy suppressants from black market dealers instead of going to an actual specialist omega doctor.

“You’re worth it.” He drops a kiss on the top of my head.
