“Sit,” Sean said again, patting the cushion beside him.“I need a broody, sexy man to tell me how cute I am.”

Laughter burst from me, and I ruffled his blond hair, completely unmoved by the twinkle in his baby blues.“You aren’t my type, boss kid.”

“I’m not a kid.”

He wasn’t, not really at twenty-seven or thereabouts with decent scruff, but he sure as fuck acted like one.

JJ, however, was all man.

I sat where Sean had indicated and allowed his antics to keep my mind from returning to the temptation of maybe—justmaybe—exploring that shift I’d felt between me and the detective. It would be explosive between us, no fucking doubt, but no matter my stance against relationships, I wasn’t sure I could trust myself from being sucked in by his tractor beam.

Fuck knew the man had a hell of a magnetic draw. He’d been on my mind too much.Flashing before my eyes while I pleased Elite’s clients, making me empty my balls prematurely more than once.

I needed to get my thoughts in order and figure shit out before I did something stupid like lower my walls and allow myself to be vulnerable again.

Chapter6

JJ

The Delaney punk sat in jail awaiting trial, and I was finally able to breathe and buckle down on the investigation to hopefully keep him there for the rest of his miserable life.

Court was set for November, and I looked forward to watching his face fall when he was found guilty. The shit we had on him…

One victim coming forwardcouldbe enough to land him behind bars, but I still pushed Mason regardless of the pickle he was in as a former escort and Joseph being a client.Elite Escorts, both branches, were aboveboard legally, but barely.I expected Mason wanted to protect not just himself but his former employer as well from the wrath of Joseph’s father.

Not everyone had the balls to lean forward into a storm and face it headfirst, determination staying their stance.

I’d done my homework, checking a bit into Mason’s past to see if I could find some way to talk him into pressing charges but hadn’t dug up anything enticing.Underhandedly, I’d also learned a little more about his friend too.

Kellen hailed from Nodhead Falls, Maine which was known for its apple orchards. He was the third of four children, the lucky fucker.I’d been an only child. He’d never married while his parents were still together forty-plus years later.Kellen had an impeccable record and envious credit score. With an MBA, he’d worked as an operations manager after moving to Boston a few years earlier. He volunteered at a veterinary clinic and had a gym membership right down the road from his Everett apartment.

He’d also been engaged to be married, but the wedding had gotten called off a couple of days prior to the exchanging of vows.

After the breakup, he’d signed on with EEMM and had been escorting men around in the two and a half years since. With his looks and build, I doubted he went a single weekend without being booked with clients.I wondered over his reasons for the career change, since he’d done well for himself prior to selling his gorgeous body.

Having looked into his ex-fiancé, Xavier Riviera, as well and seeing the current wild lifestyle Kellen’s ex lived according to his social media, I expected he was the catalyst for their ended engagement.Had he done so due to a need to sow more wild oats?Had Kellen?Or had it been something worse…infidelity?

I could imagine that latter would make a heartbroken man lash out and become an escort.

But what did I know other than the fact I wanted to see Kellen Roberts again?Lusted for interaction of any sort.

Alex hadn’t scratched the itch I’d felt deep inside me since meeting Kellen, nor was he the distraction he used to be.Sinking into my lover’s body or presenting my ass no longer gave me a sense of rightness.

I pulled into my driveway Saturday morning after grabbing groceries, my mind conflicted over my personal life.Or rather, a true lack of one.Outside Alex and his family, I had no one.No siblings. No mother still around to love me, nor the stepdad she’d married who had claimed me as his own. They rested side by side in Riverside Cemetery, no longer filling my existence with real family, laughter, and the unconditional love I longed to experience with a partner.

Forty years old, and I usually spent birthdays and holidays alone and unhappy, wishing for things I would never have all thanks to a heart that was hung up on a married man.Not that I had much time for a social life outside what I already crammed into my free hours.Between work, Alex’s neediness, and his boys who called me uncle, I didn’t have the energy for much else.

Except for my elderly neighbor, that is.

Upon opening my car’s door, the scent of his freshly mowed grass greeted me.

Mr.Rogers—no fucking lie—knelt on a thick pad alongside the flowerbed separating his lawn from mine. His smile, crooked from a stroke a couple of years earlier, met mine.

“JJ, my boy.”

I nodded since my hands were loaded down with grocery bags.“How are you, Mr.Rogers?”

“Knees aren’t happy with me right now, and it’s a good thing you just got home because I can’t get up.”
