I put through a call while shoving through the complex’s front doors.“Where are you?”I shot out the second Alex muttered in my ear.

“Dunno.”

Fucking drunk—or high.Maybe even concussed.

“Shit.”I ran across the parking lot to my car.How the fuck did Alex not know where he was?He didn’t sound like he was in any shape to answer all the questions wanting to spew from my lips.“At least tell me what city!”

“Lynn.”

Fucking hell. There was only one reason he’d gone to that godforsaken place.“Closest street corner?”

“At…crossroads.”He groaned, and I cursed again.

“Where?”I hollered, slamming my car door behind me and roaring the engine to life.

It took Alex a few seconds to answer, but he eventually managed to gasp out the name of the road sign a few feet away from him. That was all the information I needed.I knew exactly where he was.

I flipped on my unmarked car’s siren and sped past vehicles slowing off to the side as I approached them.Adrenaline raced through me as fast as I drove, but anger fueled the fire inside me rather than fear.Whatever state I found Alex in, I wanted to worsen his condition.

What the fuck was hedoing?

I found him on the corner in a seedy part of Lynn where dozens of drug busts had gone down.Dealers and hookers scattered as I came roaring up the road, lights flashing and siren chirping.

He’d more than gotten the shit kicked out of him.I barely recognized the man curled on the cold ground covered in blood. His nose was broken, I noted before I even crouched beside him.

“JJ,” he murmured, smiling through the blood coating his lips and teeth.“Knew you’d rescue me.”His garbled words could have been from whatever drugs laced his blood or a concussion.

“What did you do, Alex?”I muttered, gently rolling him onto his back, glancing around to make sure no one crept in too close. The blue and red lights bouncing off the buildings around us were enough to keep bystanders at a safe distance.

Alex grimaced, eyes clenching shut.

No blood covered his torn winter coat, but he clutched at his side.Probably had taken some kicks to his torso.

“Open your eyes,” I ordered, using my cell as a flashlight.

His pupils were fucking pinned, and I was thankful one hadn’t blown out with how badly his head appeared from two bumps already forming.

“The fuck did you do?”I asked, shoving my cell back into my pocket, readying to get him to his feet.

“Nothin’…minding my own bus’ness.”

“Bullshit.”

Alex groaned when I pulled him to his feet.

“I’m taking you to the ER.”

“No—I’m g-good.Just need bed,” he slurred.

“Jesus fucking Christ, Alex!”I boomed, propping him against me while I opened my passenger door.“You’re a fucking mess—might have internal injuries!”

“I’mfine.Reeeally.”He coughed and grimaced again, clutching his side.

“Get in the fucking car.”

He slumped on the seat, and I slammed the door, taking a good long look around us.

Darkness hovered over the corner thanks to a broken streetlight a few feet away, not that the few people still lingering allowed me to see their faces.A homeless man lay beneath a pile of blankets on an abandoned building’s stoop across the street, his back to us as though the ruckus of my arrival had gone unnoticed.
