He called me his treasure.

I lifted my head and leaned toward him as he closed the distance between us, molding his lips to mine. Hints of sambuca and its anise flavor exploded inside my mouth as he swept inside, tangling our tongues together. A light moan escaped my lips as we parted.

“The cab, Bianca.”

“Rubio’s best friend, Carlo Tripoli, tried to kidnap me.”

“What?” The growl that followed sounded almost inhuman.

Rubio De Marco. My ex-fiancé. Saying his name reminded me of his phone and the video I’d seen. Benny’s screams. The fire. Sinister laughter.

“I saw a portion of the video, Benny,” I replied quietly, resting my cheek over his breastbone.

His heart rate picked up, thrumming in his chest beneath my ear. “What did you see?”

I closed my eyes, unable to rid my brain of the flames or the cries of a tormented boy as he writhed in agony. “Benny.”

“Tell me.” His body quaked once as if he feared my answer. “Per favore.”

Chapter 6

“Tell me,” I ordered, clenching my fists around her before pressing her body closer to mine. The horror of what she could have seen on that video terrified me. What would she think of me when she learned how ruined I had become? That it didn’t stop at the skin on my body but reached deep inside and scarred my soul? “Per favore.”

“I heard your screams,” she whispered, “and the fire. They lit your body on fire.” Bianca shuddered. “I’m so sorry that happened to you, Benny.”

“Was that all you saw and heard?” I asked, trying to keep my tone even so I didn’t betray the extent of the trauma.

“Sì.”

Thankful she didn’t have to endure anything further, I nodded. “What happened doesn’t matter anymore.”

“It does to me.” Her head lifted from my chest. “They hurt you, Benny. It’s not okay.”

“I’m well aware,” I deadpanned.

“Well, I don’t like it. I threw up in the cab when I saw the video,” she admitted.
