“I know. Appreciate the hospitality, Grim.”

“Anytime, Manic. Anyone comes around, I’ll let you know.”

“Thanks.”

“Jigsaw and Diablo are taking the trackers on a ride, leading them as far from Porcia and Bianca as possible before the ruse is discovered. Hope it helps.”

“It should. For a few hours, I hope.” Bianca gave me a nervous smile as our eyes met. “I’m hopin’ that cocksucker Carlo tries to chase us down. I owe him for scaring my woman.”

“If he’s as persistent as you’ve said, I wouldn’t doubt it.”

“I can’t fucking wait.”

Grim chuckled. “Reaper or shadow, Lucifer sure knows how to pick ’em.” He lit a smoke, striding away as he headed back inside the clubhouse.

Maddog ticked his chin my way as I opened the driver’s door, ready to fire up the truck and be on our way. We’d only been here about two hours, but it felt way too fucking long.

“Gonna ride to Vegas and settle in with my ol’ lady, but I’ll show you to a safe house first. I know a place that’s quiet and secluded, and no one will give a fuck who you are.”

That sounded perfect. “Lead on, pres.”

BIANCA FIDGETED WITHthe radio until she found a station that played classic Christmas music. I almost forgot it was the holidays. So much shit had gone down recently that it never occurred to me that I only had weeks to find the perfect gift for Bianca.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Treeby Brenda Lee filtered through the speakers as I heard a squeal of delight next to me beforecara miabegan to sing. She turned up the volume and danced in the seat, wiggling her sexy ass to the beat.

Mesmerized, I had to force myself to pay attention to the road.

Did she know how beautiful she looked? How tempting?

“Aren’t you going to sing?”

“No,” I answered gruffly.

“Why not?”

I didn’t want to explain that my last memories of my father had been during Christmas, right after we put up the tree and decorated it. I will never forget how those twinkling bulbs seemed so happy at the same time I experienced horror and trauma.

“Benny?”

“Let it go,” I growled.

Her happiness vanished in an instant.

Fuck. I didn’t mean for that to happen. “It’s not good. My memories of that time,” I finally managed to choke out.

Smoke. My burning skin. Crying. Across from me, my father’s dead body was lying feet from where I struggled to breathe—something a kid should never experience.

Bianca turned off the radio. “You never mentioned what time of year everything happened.” Her hand reached for mine, closing over my fingers as she squeezed. “I’m sorry, Benny.”

“I don’t want to ruin shit for you.”

“You’re not.”

“But your smile vanished.” Something inside me snarled with rage. An over-the-top, irrational need to ensure Bianca always had a reason to smile and eliminate everything or anyone who stood in her way.

Her head tilted to the side as she thought over my words. “It means a lot to you, doesn’t it?”

Her smile? Fuck yeah. “Yes.”
