“Do you have any idea how awesome that is? No one has cared about my smile since mypadredied. Well, no one other than Porcia.”

“Making you smile fills a void inside me. It’s not empty anymore.” Fuck. That sounded dumb.

Bianca blinked, interlocking our fingers. “You sure are romantic for a guy who lurks in the shadows and rides a Harley.”

I pursed my lips, ignoring how the movement tugged the skin on the damaged side of my face. “Romantic?”

She giggled. “Yeah.”

“Don’t tell anyone, especially Maddog. I’ll never live it down.”

Her soft laughter tinkled like Christmas bells around us.

And that was the exact moment everything went to shit.

Chapter 10

Before we left TheCrossroads, Maddog had pulled me aside, reaching for a shot of whiskey at the bar. I kept one eye on the hall, alert as I waited for Bianca to change. After I dropped the suitcases inside the room, I gave her a few minutes of privacy since I knew we’d be on the road well into the night. It was close to midnight now.

“There’s something I don’t get, Manic,” Maddog began, tossing back the amber fire I knew he enjoyed. He said once that he never rode out without a shot to warm his belly.

I took a long pull from my beer, knowing I wouldn’t drink more than that since I planned to drive. “What’s that?”

“Why the fuck was her grandad always trying to marry Bianca off? First, Rubio. Then, Carlo. It doesn’t sit well with me.” He frowned, cracking his neck. “When’s her birthday?”

A weird question.

“The 29th of this month. She’ll be—”

“Twenty-one,” he finished, cutting me off. “Fuck.”

How the fuck did he know that? I finished the beer and shoved the bottle away. “Talk to me. What’s spinning in your head?”

“Is she due to inherit?”

His blunt question confused me. “Inherit what?”
