“They have gone.” Cronus averted his gaze.

“I can see that.” Eddie stood and stopped right in front of him. Her heart missed a beat, and the pit of her stomach dropped. “But where have they gone?”

“To ensure your safety,” Cronus said. “We are to remain here until they return.”

“Hello?” Yesterday waved his arms. “Are you listening to me? I told you Wrath is on his way here now.” His voice went shriller. “Not his demons. Wrath himself is on his way here, and you have to leave.”

Cronus stuck his head in Yesterday’s face and snarled. “We are to remain here.”

“I know you think I took your blade thingy.” Yesterday’s eyes rounded like small moons. “But I’m telling you the truth. Wrath knows where you are, and he’s coming for you.”

With a grumble, Cronus shifted and padded to the cave entrance. “If he lies, I eat him.”

Seemed fair enough to Eddie. “How do you know he’s on his way?”

“Because I was with him.” Yesterday rolled his eyes. “I am from his court, and I went to see what was going on. I can slip in and out without anybody knowing.” He batted his eyes at her. “I did it for you, Eddie. I risked myself to spy on Wrath for you.”

“He’s a feral runt,” Cronus said. “But he is not lying about Wrath. I can smell him coming.”

“Shit!” Eddie ran to the cave opening and peered into the undergrowth. Although what she hoped to accomplish mystified her, it seemed like the right sort of thing to do. “What do we do?”

If Shade were here, she could ask him. And then she wanted to slap herself for having that thought. She didn’t need Shade. She was a strong, indepen—nope, not working. She still wished Shade was here.

“I’m glad you asked.” Yesterday scuttled up beside her. “Because I’ve given this a lot of thought.”

Cronus snapped at him.

Yelping, Yesterday leapt behind her. “You’re Nephilim, right, and from what I heard in Wrath’s court, you can repair the hell seals.”

“Is that true?” Eddie looked at Cronus.

He tilted his head. “It’s not completely impossible.” Glaring at Yesterday, he said, “Nephilim wield the power of two realms, and that gives them greater powers over the seals than even the hell princes.”

“Does Shade know this?”

“Of course Shade knows that.” Yesterday rolled his eyes, recovering his courage now that he was hiding behind her. “And Uriel knew it too. That’s why she was so keen for you to come down here.” His expression grew cunning. “It also explains why Shade is letting you stay and why Wrath wants to get his hands on you so bad.”

He’d lost her on that part. And why was she feeling oddly let down that Shade had known this. It’s not like she wanted him to keep her around for the pleasure of her company. A subtle vibration rumbled through the earth and into the soles of Eddie’s feet. “Is that Wrath?”

Cronus nodded.

“How come I don’t feel that when Shade is around?”

“Wrath is—”

“Does it matter.” Yesterday grabbed her hand and tugged. “You need to get out of here.”

“Master commanded us to stay.” Cronus looked troubled.

“You can’t.” Yesterday hissed. “The best thing you can do is get to Shade’s seal and repair it. Then Shade can fight Wrath. It’ll end in their usual stalemate, and you go home.”

She looked at Cronus. “Would that work? Could I do that?”

“I do not trust the imp.” Cronus’s shoulder muscles tensed as if he was getting ready to fight. “But he is right about Wrath, and we have minutes to decide.”

“Well.” The vibration under Eddie’s feet was getting stronger. “I’m not saying yes to the seal, but I am saying yes to getting the hell out of Dodge.”
