She had so many questions, and he had pathetically few answers for her. Recent events had shaken him from his complacency. For thousands of years, he and his fellow hell princes had drifted along in the same manner. They fought, they struggled for power, every now and again, they joined forces against the archangels, but they stayed constant.

The rules had changed, and Eddie had been caught up in that. He wished he could have spared her, but fate didn’t work like that. It tangled all of them in its webbed skeins and twisted their existences together.

Still, fate would not stop him from doing all in his power to keep Eddie safe. Maybe at the end of this, he could return her to her life.

The idea left him feeling oddly adrift.

Eddie would not have believed it possible, but the next thing she knew, she was blinking awake.

Shade must have moved, because she was lying curled up on her side, facing the fire.

“Psst!” A familiar yellow head popped into her line of sight. “Wake up before he eats me.”

Yesterday cowered in front of her, a very angry Cronus towering above him and dripping long, sticky streamers of saliva on him.

“Yesterday.” Her eyes were gritty, and her body felt like she’d been asleep for a while.

“Of course it’s me.” Yesterday sidled away from Cronus.

Cronus slammed one big front paw down on him and flattened him face first to the cave floor.

“Eddie,” Yesterday yelped. “He’s going to eat me.”

A distinct possibility, but Eddie had experienced all the bloodshed she could. “He won’t eat you.”

“I might,” Cronus said.

“Why don’t we find out where he’s been first?” Eddie levered herself into a sitting position. Her muscles felt strong and sure, and the grogginess faded quickly. Any residual pains from her fight had also disappeared.

“Mvebeensryingferya,” Yesterday mumbled into the dust.

Eddie motioned Cronus to lift his dinner plate paw.

With a grumble, Cronus complied but stayed within snapping distance.

“You disappeared.” Eddie stretched and yawned. “And so did my heaven blade.”

Cronus growled.

“I didn’t take it.” Ears twitching, Yesterday kept his gaze on Cronus’s jaw. “I swear I didn’t.”

“His word means nothing.”

Eddie didn’t need Cronus telling her what she was already thinking. “I think you did, and so does Cronus. And we both want it back.”

“I don’t have it.” Sweat trickled down Yesterday’s cheek. Or it could have been Cronus slobber. Either way, it wasn’t a good look.

Eddie didn’t need to look intimidating. Cronus pretty much had that covered. So, she stuck to the questions. “Where is it?”

“I don’t know.” Yesterday swallowed and licked his thin lips. “I don’t have it. I promise. I don’t have it.”

“I want to believe you.” And she did. “But you did take it.”

“Look.” Yesterday tried to shift away from Cronus. Cronus growled, and he froze. “I came here. At great risk to myself.” He splayed his hand over his chest. “Great risk. To let you know that Wrath knows where you are, and he’s coming for you.”

“He could be lying.”

“But he might not be.” Eddie checked around the cave for the two she didn’t see. “Where are Shade and Xerxes?”
