She purses her lips at me. “Did it occur to you that I might feel the same way?”

My eyebrows lift. I think about it for a moment. “No. But even so, I’ll never assume.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m a gentleman.”

“You’re also old-fashioned. Some girls like sex as much as guys.”

“Hmm.”

“You don’t believe me?”

I frown.

“Alex,” she says patiently, “I bet I can out-sex you.”

“I sincerely doubt it.”

“I’ve changed my mind. I’m going to make it my life’s work to wear you out.”

“You’re welcome to try,” I say, amused.

“Challenge accepted.” Her eyes hold sultry desire.

We study each other, and my skin prickles at the thought that this gorgeous young woman wants me. “Even though I look like this?” I gesture at my head.

“Your hair is pretty wild. What have you done to it?”

“I don’t know. Must be the way I slept. Nothing to do with someone running their fingers through it last night.”

She giggles.

I look at my reflection in the window and pat it. “This bit won’t stay down. And I need a shave. I look like a yeti.”

“An adorable one.” She kisses me. “Let’s sit outside for a minute,” she says softly. “It’s a gorgeous morning.”

We take our coffees out onto the patio. I put up the umbrella, and we sit in the shade, stretching out our legs.

“What time does the rehearsal start?” she asks.

“Three p.m. at the church.”

“So what’s happening this morning?”

“My parents are arriving. Dad and Sherry’s flight lands at twelve. Kait’s been in Auckland for a few days but hers will arrive around the same time. They’ll both be here for lunch.”

“Oh.” She widens her eyes. “Are you sure you want me to meet your parents?”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“It’s a bit… serious.”

“That’s true. I forgot you were a one-night stand.”

“Alex! You know what I mean.”

“They’re important to me. I want them to meet you, because you’re important to me.”
