“Hmm.”

Her lips curve up. “What?”

“Nothing.”

“Alex! People always think they’re going to fit at the beginning, right? And it’s only as time goes by that you realize it’s not going to work?”

“I imagine it happens that way for most people.”

She looks into my eyes. “I might drive you crazy after a few weeks or months.”

“That’s true.”

“You might think, jeez, that woman is annoyingly cheerful, or wow, she really gets on my nerves.”

“I think it’s more likely you’ll wonder what you’re doing with this grumpy old fart, as Saxon called me.”

She scrapes the razor carefully beneath my nose. I press my lips together to give her better access, watching her.

When she’s finished, she rinses the razor. Then she puts her arms around my neck. “That’s never going to happen,” she says, her voice husky, and kisses me.

I bear it for as long as I can, then get to my feet and cup her face in my hands. “I want to taste you,” I murmur.

“Not until I’ve had a wash.”

“Fine.” I turn on the tap in the shower. “I’ll wash you first. Then I’ll taste you.”

“Oh,” she says helplessly.

I take her into the shower cubicle, pour shower gel onto the puff, and wash her top half, taking time on her breasts. Then I cover her bottom half in foam, turn her so she’s leaning on the glass, and wash between her legs, my fingers slipping through her folds, until her breath is coming in ragged gasps. Only then do I turn her back to face me, drop to my knees on the shower floor, and slide my tongue inside her, licking and sucking as the shower cubicle gradually fills with clouds of steam.

Much later, we go up to the house for lunch, and join Mae, Neal, Dad, Sherry, Kait, Gaby, Tyson, Damon, and Belle, picking at platters full of sliced meats and cheeses, various breads, and olives and chutneys. Well, all of us except Kait. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her eat in public.

“So,” Sherry says, “what have you all been up to today?”

For a moment, I can only think about Missie’s slippery body in the shower, and I say, “Uh…”

Next to me, Missie hides a smile, Gaby smirks, and Belle giggles.

“I forgot you were all young things with loads of energy,” Sherry says as everyone laughs.

“Actually we went for a walk through the gardens,” I reply.

“You have an amazing array of plants here,” Missie says to Mae.

“Oh are you a gardener?” Kait asks.

I glance at her. I know her well enough to hear the bite behind her words.

Missie just laughs, presumably missing the sarcasm. “God, no. I know next to nothing about plants. But I can appreciate a beautiful display.”

Kait puts down her serviette. “May I borrow your bathroom?” she asks. She directs the question to Neal.

“First down the corridor on your right,” he says, gesturing at the nearest door.

She rises and walks toward the house.
