“Woah woah woah, where is the badass girl I know you to be?” He knocks gently on my forehead. “Hello, Alex, are you in there? Because the girl running your body right now is tripping.”

I smile weakly.

“Come on, Angel, let’s just enjoy the moment. Tell all the voices in your head to shut up.” He leans in to kiss my forehead, my nose, and then my lips. Just like that, my demons are silenced.

In perfect timing, our food is delivered, and we begin to consume every bite in front of us.

We finish eating. Kohen grabs the check and we make our way out to the car. I feel the heat of his hand when he intertwines his fingers with mine. My breath hitches. It’s such a simple act but almost more intimate than sex. Sex is easy. Find a hot guy, make him want you, and let him fuck you. For me, it’s always about making men want me, letting them have me then driving them fucking crazy.

I’ve never held anyone’s hand, even my ex didn’t like it. He said it made him look weak. That’s part of the reason I don’t look for anything but a quick fuck. He taught me that the most intimate parts of a relationship made me weak. Like my mother, and I never want to be like her. So, I don’t seek out anything but some good dick in my pussy and go on about my day.

My phone rings and I take it out of my bag to look at it. It’s Cora but I already missed the call. I dial her back and get no answer, so I text her while climbing into his car.

Me: hey C what's up? Sorry I didn’t answer. I was at dinner with Kohen.

I still don’t get a response, so I call one more time. Something in the pit of my stomach makes me feel a tinge of worry. Still no answer, so I decide to check her location. Right at that moment, I get a text, and my stomach drops.

Cora: SOS

I call her and again no answer, so I go back to the location app, worried as fuck at this point.

It looks like she is at Kohen’s. What the hell?

“You okay, Angel? You’re so quiet all of a sudden.”

“It’s Cora. She needs me. Can you take me to your place like ASAP?”

“Yeah, it shouldn’t take too long if I get on the freeway. What's going on? You look like you have seen a ghost.”

It feels like Ihaveseen a ghost. Like I could be losing another best friend. The SOS text is something we came up with in case one of us was uncomfortable on a date and needed saving.

“I don’t know. She sent an SOS, which she would never do if she was safe. Can you just please hurry?”

He grabs my hand and brings it to his lips for a kiss. “Your hands are shaking, babe. Don’t worry, I’ll get you there.”

The car accelerates with a hum, and the scenery starts to blur. I close my eyes, sending a silent prayer up. I don’t know if I believe in prayer but Cora does and for her, I’ll do anything.

“I thought she was with Edward. Her location shows her at your place. I’m hoping it was an accident or something, but she isn’t answering her phone.” I know it’s probably not an emergency because she would have called 911, but it is urgent. My anxiety is going to the worst-case scenario, the scars from Cecille’s death run deep.

I text back.

Me: SOS 5

So she knows I’m five minutes out. That gives her time to let whoever is bothering her know that I’m on the way, she has to go.

“It’s going to be okay, Alex. Whatever is happening, I will make sure it’s okay.”

“You don't fucking understand. I can’t lose her.”

“You won’t.” I fully expect him to pull his hand from mine because of how I snapped at him as punishment. Withdrawing affection, but he doesn’t. Instead, he squeezes it gently and brings it to his lips for a kiss. “It’s gonna be okay. Trust me.”

So, I do something that is completely out of the ordinary for me. I trust him.

ALEX

We pull into the driveway, and I text her letting her know that we are here.
