No response.

I call again and her phone goes straight to voicemail.

Come on, Cora.

“I’m going to check inside, okay?” Kohen says.

“Okay, thank you. I’m going to wait here.” I dial her a few more times and it goes straight to voicemail.

What the fuck?

My phone rings and I answer it without looking. “Hello?”

“Hey, she isn’t here. No one has seen her. They said her and Edward were here earlier but that was around eight. Edward is passed out in his room.”

“What the fuck? That dick! It’s past midnight.”

“I know, baby. I tried waking him up, but he must have taken something because he wouldn’t budge. I’m coming back out and I’ll drive you to look for her.”

“No, I’ll get an Uber. Don’t worry about it. This isn’t your problem.”

I hang up and pull the Uber app up on my phone. I know I’m being rude but I don’t care. My best friend comes first.

I walk to the end of the driveway to wait for my ride, and then I check Cora’s location again just in case. The little red circle is moving. It’s almost right on top of where I am and I refresh, making sure it isn’t lagging or something. If her phone dies, it would be gray. I don’t even think twice. I chunk my heels into the grass and run.

I run in the direction of that little red dot because she is less than five minutes away and her dot is moving slowly, so she has to be walking, or with someone who is driving extra slowly. I feel rocks under my feet and it hurts, but absolutely nothing will stop me.

My heart drops when I see her, my feet speed up and my strides become longer as I just need to get to her. Make sure she’s okay. Her arms are wrapped around her little body as if she is cold or in pain.

Hot tears spill from my eyes. I was having fun, laughing and kissing and talking with Kohen while my best friend needed me.

I call out to her, and she stops walking and turns slowly in my direction. I shout again and she sees me. She stands still and I couldn’t get to her any slower. It’s as if years pass before I reach her. Like everything is in a slow-motion time warp.

As I get closer, I see mascara running down her face. She has been crying. There’s blood running down her leg and it takes everything in me not to throw up. Not because blood makes me queasy but because something happened to my best friend.

“Oh my god, Cora. Are you okay?” I wrap my arms around her. Painful sobs leave her as I hold her tight and safe in my arms. “What the fuck happened? Why are you walking?”

“It hurts,” is all that leaves her mouth.

“What hurts?”

She just sobs into my shoulder.

I pull my phone from my pocket. My Uber left. “I’m going to call an ambulance.”

“No, Alex. Please, no.”

“Okay, babe.”

Fuck.I dial Kohen and he answers on the first ring.

“Are you okay? Did you find Cora?”

“No, Kohen, we are not okay. I’m on 5th and Holland. Please come get us. Something happened to Cora and I need you,” my voice cracks as tears spill down my face uncontrollably.

“On my way.”

I hang up and feel so numb, so helpless standing here with her in the middle of the street. So much is going through my head right now, but I have to focus. I have to keep all my questions to myself for now.
