“You have kept up your end of the bargain and you have been focused, just make sure it stays that way.”

I turn to look at him as I exit the car. “Well, of course. Why wouldn’t it?” I feel like I know where he is heading with this. I knew once he saw Alex, he was going to make some type of demands.

“Let's not play games, son, I saw the girl. Get rid of her.”

Fuck.

“Dad, she won’t make me lose...”

He interrupts, “This isn’t a request, Kohen. Do as I say or I will take you off the will, that includes your mother’s ashes.” Fucking, piece of shit. “Your house, your car, all the money you use to pay for your little sluts clothes, and the dates you take her on, did you think I wouldn’t find out?” He checks his teeth in the rearview mirror and straightens his hair before repeating the words I have no intention of listening to. “Get rid of her, she’s nothing but a hole to stick your dick in, and I need you focused. You have a future, and a girl like that will ruin it.” He slams on the gas, causing the door to shut as he speeds off. I fucking hate him.

I climb into the hellcat and it’s fucking gorgeous, but it’s not worth losing Alex over. Nothing is worth that. Except my mom’s ashes. There has to be a way for me to have both. I’ll find a way. I hate how he holds that over me. I turn the car on and the power vibrating beneath me causes adrenaline to pump through my veins. I rev the gas and the car shakes with power. Goddamn, this is badass. I can’t wait to get home and fuck Alex in here.

Alex

Cora and I spend the entire afternoon shopping for this party. X has been texting me all day but I've been keeping it casual. I don't want him to get the wrong idea just because I’m going to this party with him. Well, technically not with him. I’m going with Cora and we are just meeting him there. He has asked about Kohen a few times but I’m not fucking stupid. He knows where he is just as much as I do.

X: hey gorgeous, want to meet for dinner before the party?

Me: can’t sorry, our Uber driver just pulled up to olive garden and we have our name in line.

X: I can join y’all, which one?

Me: oh, no sorry OG is our girl time, we just want to spend some time with Cora alone.

X: ahh okay no worries I’ll see you tonight

Me: K.

I put my phone indo not disturbmode, guilt inching its way back into my gut. I’m still upset at Kohen, it seemed like he wanted to keep me a secret or was ashamed.

The waitress calls our name and the hostess leads us to our table. We place our regular order. I get chicken Alfredo and she gets lasagna, one of us always gets the soup, and the other a salad so we can share. The waiters always give us shit and say we aren’t supposed to, but sweet little Cora talks us out of it every time. We also order our usual pitcher of green apple Moscato. That's the real reason we come here. It is infused with fruit and one pitcher has us feeling good.

As soon as the pitcher hits the table, we pour ourselves a cup, downing breadsticks to keep us a little sober. It's only four pm so we have time to go home and nap before meeting.

It feels so good to be spending time with my best friend. We sip and chat about all the things we have missed.

“How are your theater classes going?” I stuff my mouth with some Alfredo while she answers, when we drink, she tends to be long-winded.

“It’s great, my professor says I’m incredibly talented and I got the lead in the next production.”

I swallow before responding. “Oh my god, that's amazing, C. Way to go. I knew you were going to be a star.” She giggles, sipping some more Moscato. “I’m serious, ever since we were kids, I knew you would do something huge.”

Tears fill her eyes. “Thank you, Alex, that means everything. You are going to do big things as well.” I scoff in response, finishing up what's on my plate before washing it down with wine. “Stop, you're so talented…”

I interrupt her before she can finish, “Stop, Cora, you know I’m undecided. Dance isn’t a real career.” My lip quivers, the alcohol rushing through me making me more emotional than usual.

“It is a real career if you make it one. I have never seen anyone dance like you. It’s captivating. Follow your dreams, it’s what Cecille would want.” She grabs my hands across the table, holding them to comfort me. “Oh, and fuck anything your mom put in your head.” We bust out laughing.

“Cora! That mouth!” I joke, feigning shock.

“Well, I mean it. Forget her, she doesn’t have a voice here.”

I stay silent, grateful for the encouragement of my bestie. We spend the next hour laughing and joking, making the best of our time together. The sun starts to set, and we schedule a pick up so we can get home, grab a power nap, and get ready for the night. Kohen pops into my head, but I don't want to go there right now.

“You, okay?” She reads me like a book.

“It’s Kohen, I feel like he is embarrassed of me.”
