She walks out into the room. “These are shocked tears. I mean…Mark, you already bought me a car!”

I laugh. “I don’t know if you know this, but…we are filthy rich.”

“You are.” She says nervously. I frown. “I guess I’ll get some of it? Fifty percent? Isn’t that what it usually is?” All of the air leaves me. She misunderstands my reaction. “I can have less. I can take way less. I don’t need much at all.”

“You can have whatever you want.” I say, sounding pissed. I am pissed. But not about the stupid money. I am not even sure why I’m pissed. What did I hope today would accomplish? I guess I wanted her to change her mind? Want to stay? Want to really be together? All the things I have said one million times that Idon’twant?

“I can kind of see it,” She says as her gorgeous hazel eyes bounce around the big room. She looks thoughtful, surprised, beautiful, of course, but not exactly happy.

My phone starts buzzing. “Shit, I have to go already. Do you want to stay? I have the keys. Raul will stay with you?”

“Oh, um, alright.” She gives me a small smile. I am not sure if she likes this or not. Maybe she likes the idea, but not this space. Or she likes the idea and the space, but wanted to get it for herself. I really am an idiot. “Mark?” I’ve been staring.

“Uh, yeah, so, I’ll see you at six then?”

“Right.” I turn to leave but she stops me. “Thank you for this. It’s the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me.” She stretches up onto her toes to wrap her arms around my neck and hug me. It’s quick and before I can grab her and hold her, she’s down on her feet. But her arms are on my chest and her big dewy eyes are on me. But I just can’t read them anymore. I look at her lips. Does she want me to kiss her? If this had been just weeks ago, I would’ve known the answer.

And I would’ve withheld my kisses from her.

Because I am a dick.

She backs away. “Six.” She says.

“Yeah.” I say, and she moves to the window. She waves at Raul to come in.

I head out into the light.

I look back and see her wave goodbye at me.

Damn it.

I should’ve kissed her.

I should’ve kissed her every fucking time.

“More turtlenecks.” She says from the staircase. My lungs do the achy spasmy thing again at the sight of her. She looks phenomenal. I’m about to say so, but my eyes make my way down the tight sparkly green dress to her thighs where the dress stops.

I…

She…

“Mark?” She looks up at me with a confused smile.

I have to swallow. “Short.”

She almost laughs. “What?”

Use words, dumbass! You talk for a living!

“It’s very short,” I manage to get out, giving myself an eyeful again, up and down, because I can’t help myself.

She looks down, embarrassed. “Sorry, I know, but it covers all the wounds and tonight is cocktail party attire so…”

“It’s sexy as fuck, Eleanna. Don’t be sorry.”

She doesn’t look up at me. “Let’s just get this over with, right?”
