CHAPTER 7

Eleanna

“You sound hopeful.” Luna frowns at me from the screen as I search through my closet.

“I know.”

“Toohopeful.”

“I know!” I plop down on the seat in front of my desk, throwing my head in my hands. “It’s just I saw him with those kids. He was a real, kind human being for a second.”

“Or he was putting on a better act for the cameras.”

I shake my head. “The cameras didn’t follow into the back supply rooms. He went over the list of needs with the center’s manager again and again. And he never let go of little Gracie’s hand for the whole tour, cameras or not.”

“But—“

“And! He agreed to dinner.”

“Okay fine, babe. Let’s get our hopes up. For what, exactly? He told you he hates you and your whole family!”

I sigh heavily. What am I hoping for? “The goal is the same.” I finally say.

“The goal was to tame a Made man by day and make a million little mafia babies at night.”

“Luna!”

“That is your dream and you know it. And I love that for you. But you didn’t get the Beast to your Beauty, bella sorella.”

“No, not a beast, more like a robot, maybe?”

“Yes! Empty inside, but able to imitate human life forms.”

“That’s the thing. I don’t think he’s really empty inside, not deep down. I just have to work at getting him to open up, get under his skin somehow.”

She grimaces. “Good luck.”

“Ugh.” I look up at the ceiling.

“Like I said, you’re looking too hopeful. Come back down to Earth. You think you’re going to be able to close the revolving door to his pants we’ve seen in the tabloids with this one conversation tonight?”

“No, we’re not married yet. But we will be living in the same house, sharing each other’s lives. I could make his days hell. I have some power here, right?”

“Yes. Plus, you have a virgin vagina, don’t forget that.” I roll my eyes at her, but she shrugs. “Pussies are power in our world, girl. Pussiesarepower.” She watches me for a few seconds and suddenly cries out. “Mia! Mayday mayday!”

“Luna, what the heck?” I say, rushing over to turn down my laptop volume. Of course, I’m too late. In waltzes one very tired, moody little sister.

“What?”

“As usual, your sister needs help choosing an outfit.” I sigh as they laugh at me. But then I savor the moment as the two start talking over me. Soon, I’ll be out of this house and in a whole new life. I let them pick everything, which results in a coral top that goes straight across my arms to show both shoulders, tucked into dark jeans. They’re the tightest pair of jeans I own. I said my butt looked huge and my two advisors said in unison that that was the point. Mia brings in her black combat boots and a worn red denim jacket. Somehow, the coral and red work together.

“Combat boots?” I ask.

“I was listening outside your door, obviously, and you need them. ‘Cause tonight’s going to be a straight-up battle. Choose violence.”

“Huh?”
