Vitri and Ilk had gone hunting, and I was glad.The fruits I had snacked on earlier in the day seemed so long ago, and I was desperate for a decent meal.I showed Erica how to drink water from the tree near Vitri’s treehouse, and she was impressed.She was less impressed when I recounted how Vitri had slammed my face into the tree, but she still laughed.
“Misunderstandings with Earth sayings can lead to extreme results,” Erica said with a smirk.
I narrowed my eyes at her.“Explain.”But she only offered me a cheeky grin.
We sat together near the pile of wood we’d gathered to make a fire, waiting for Vitri and Ilk to return before we lit it.I was concerned the fire would draw out something else from the forest, but Erica just shrugged.Apparently, there wasn’t much wildlife near the base of the mountains, thanks to Ilk driving them away from the Ghaal colony.
Erica stared at me, and after a moment, I said, “What is it?”
“I like your hair.It seems we had the same idea.I wanted to chop mine off the second it started getting knotty.”
Erica’s hair was still long and braided in a dozen separate braids, then pulled back into one thick plait.“I like your braids.”
“Thank you,” she said, smiling and running the plait across her palm.“Ilk did it.”
“What made you not cut your hair?”
Erica chuckled.“I was going to, but when I mentioned it, Ilk made a sound like a dying whale.”She imitated the sound then, releasing a gloriously loud and mellow moan.I almost choked as I laughed, and she chuckled with me.“So, I guess he didn’t want me to have short hair.”She shrugged.“That’s okay.I like the braids, and if it makes him happy, then bonus.”
“When did he first talk to you?”
Erica pursed her lips as she thought through the days.“We managed to exchange names, then I let him do that mind meld thing.”
“Youlethim do it?”
“Yeah, I mean, he did it for a second, and I figured out longer would allow us to talk.Wait…” she turned to me, frowning, “… you didn’t let Vitri?”
“He did it while I slept,” I grumbled.Erica looked like she was about to smirk, then stopped herself.Maybe she was going to remind me they were aliens as if I wasn’t reminded every second I looked at that gorgeous hunk of a male.

“Ilk says he claimed you,” I blurted out, and Erica released a bark of laughter.
“Did he now?I’ll have to have words with him.”
“Does that mean you’ve…” I trailed off, suddenly awkward about something that wouldn’t usually bother me.How do you ask a new friend if they fucked an alien?Especially when you just got yourself off with one.
“Had sex with him?”She arched a brow at me, a slight smirk playing on her lips.
“Yeah.”
She looked at the ground, tracing small circles in the mossy undergrowth with her finger, but she was still smiling.“Yes.I had sex with Ilk.More than once.”
