There was another pause, and I’m sure Vitri knew I was lying. When he released me, he offered a grin.“If you do forget me, I’ll simply remind you every day.”

“Deal.”I shyly returned his smile before he guided me to move to his left as I was to follow him down again. When my foot slipped, and I gasped, I bit my tongue too late to stop the sound of panic that escaped.I needed to keep talking to keep up the distraction. It was a bonus that I enjoyed talking to Vitri, but I wouldn’t let him know just how much.It would increase his already over-inflated ego.

“Did you ever have a job?”I asked.

“I don’t think so, not unless you count being created to breed a job.”

“So you just spend all day doing whatever you want?”He didn’t answer immediately, and something dark passed over his eyes when I glanced at him.I regretted my question.I should’ve known it would take him back to his time with the Ghaal and whatever they had done to him and his brothers.Vitri had ghosted his hands over my calves as he guided me where to step, and I added, “I mean, since you left. You just do whatever?”

“I guess so.Aside from protecting introduced species.”

“Aliens like me.”

He chuckled, moving his hand up to grab my ass and squeezed.“There are no aliens like you.”

Why did my mind keep flooding back to the images of the asha?Them and their stupidly gorgeous skin that almost glowed and their bullshit songs they sang to lure Vitri to them.

Oh, dear God, Iwasjealous.

This seemed like a moment I should be standing in front of a mirror and proclaiming, who are you?I don’t recognize the woman in front of me.You used to be cool, man.

I guess being abducted by aliens and dumped on a strange planet changes your perspective.

“Your turn,” I said, ignoring the ache in my fingers as I gripped a particularly sharp edge.

“For what?”

“To ask me a question.Keep talking to me.”

“Soon you can relax, mate… we are almost at the beach.”

His soothing tone sent a rush through me that was both calming and thrilling. He had started calling mematemore often, and I still didn’t mind it.Maybe it was almost his version ofbabe, andit was cute.I nodded.“Ask me something else about Earth.”

“What was your favorite food?”

My lips twisted in thought as I considered the question. If I had to pick one thing, only one,it wasn’t as easy as just sayingchocolateorcoffee.Though, fuck knows, I would kill for a coffee.I made a noise of consideration so Vitri knew I had heard his question and was probably putting way more thought into it than necessary as we continued to climb.

“Duck,” I finally said.

“Duck?”

“It’s a bird, a flying animal, kind of like your vulture things but smaller. My mom used to cook duck with orange sauce… a fruit… and marinate it.It was mouth-watering.So fucking good.”I sighed.“Kinda hard to realize I’ll never have it again.”

“I’ll find you some duck and orange,” Vitri proclaimed, wrapping his hands around my waist and lifting me from the cliff face.

I chuckled before sighing deeply as I felt my feet slightly sink into the sand.

We made it,finally.“How?There are no ducks on this planet.”

Vitri wrapped an arm around me and scooped me up, spinning on the spot.“We will try every animal and fruit on the planet until we find one that tastes the same. We’ll journey across the complete island, even if it takes several cycles, and we’ll find you someduck.”

“And coffee?”

“Coffee?”

I laughed.“Never mind. Now, put me down. You’re very cute, but I’m getting dizzy, and we have to find your brother.”

Vitri didn’t put me down, instead taking a moment to stare into my eyes, the green of his glowing as a cheeky grin lit his face.“You think I’m cute?”
