Because yes, of course, rushing toward me at full speed apparently meantplease follow me, tiny stranger!

When he was satisfied I would follow, he kept moving, ducking and weaving between the trees and shrubbery when I expected him to simply barge through them.Vitri moved with surprising grace for his size, and I almost forgot my thirst for a moment, lost in the trance of his movements.Beyond his appearance, it seemed he really was one with this forest, knowing every nook, tree, and root, and almost danced around them as I scrambled to keep up and not fall flat on my face in the process.

He stopped underneath a large tree, a single tall trunk with no branches anywhere within reach. The bark was brown but had a strange yellow tinge to it that made my lip curl in distaste.Vitri pointed happily at the tree, and I cautiously approached.Upon closer inspection, I saw trickles of liquid sliding down between the heavily creviced bark. When I simply watched the tree, looking between Vitri and it, he pointed again, and when I did nothing, he kneeled and pressed his lips against the tree.Fascinated, I watched as his tongue darted out and guided the water into his mouth. His tongue was almost a gray color and had a curve in it that he used to create a funnel and channel the water directly down his throat.

“No fucking way,” I muttered. He was built for the forest.I wasn’t an idiot.Evolution wasn’t news to me, but it never ceased to amaze me how creatures adapted to their environments over millennia, their bodies and habits changing to the smallest detail.I craned my neck, trying to see the top of the tree but couldn’t.I could only assume it somehow collected rainwater, but then again, this was an alien planet. For all I knew, this damn treegeneratedwater.

Vitri stopped drinking and looked at me expectantly, and when I didn’t move, he grabbed the back of my head and guided me toward the tree trunk. But he was strong, and my instinct was to resist the motion.Unfortunately, this resulted in my face slamming into the bark and a strip of it cutting my lip.Vitri released a strangled cry and let me go before immediately grabbing at me again with both hands and trying to draw me closer.

“Don’t touch me,” I cried, trying to keep the tears of frustration and pain at bay as my lip throbbed.Touching my fingers to my face, they came away red and wet with my blood.“Bullshit, absolute fucking bullshit.”Vitri was watching me, his eyes wide and sorrowful. When he reached for me again, I slapped his hand away.“I said don’t touch me!”

He withdrew his hand, eyeing where I had struck him before returning to gaze at me.He was crouched down, so now he was looking up at me—those big green doe eyes made it hard to be mad at him.Sighing heavily, I wiped at my lip before facing the tree again and gently leaned forward.I had to purse my lips and find a crevice the right size, but I was surprised at the steady flow of the water once I found it.It was more than a trickle, and although the blood from my lip mingled with the water, giving the taste a metallic sting along with the earthy flavor it already held, I was able to quench my thirst.

When I finally pulled away, Vitri was still watching me.

“Okay, so maybe you’re useful to have around.”

I don’t think I’ve ever been in such a one-sided conversation, and the hulking great alien, now on his knees, looked at me with those bright green eyes.He reached up, his long fingers embellished with blunt, dark claws, and I flinched as he touched my lip.

“Bada,” he muttered.

“It’s okay.”I could only assume he was apologizing.Maybe he was sayingmmm… blood, yum-yum, yum-yum,but I think if there was ever a time to attempt to be optimistic, this was probably it.Standing, I took a step away from him.Tapping on the tree, I pointed in the direction I had been headed.“Are these trees throughout the forest?”

He mimicked my motion, pointing from the tree, and then swept his arm around the forest.I took that as an affirmative.“Right, thanks.”I continued the way I had been heading.Vitri was useful, but he was alsoverytouchy, and I wasn’t okay with that at the best of times, let alone with an alien I wasn’t entirely convinced wasn’t trying to fatten me up to eat me.

So, I started walking.

Because one direction was just as good as another at this point.

Chapter Six

VITRI

Tori was bleeding, and it was my fault.I stayed on my knees, watching her disappear into the forest, slowly stepping over and around the obstacles on the ground.I wouldn’t leave her alone. She was still too fragile, and while she had some fight in her, she needed me, even if she didn’t know it.The pain I had experienced in my chest when I had injured her crushed me.The anger in her tone, even if I didn’t understand the words, cut me deeper until I wished I could take away the pain and blood and experience it myself rather than have anything hurt her.The last thing I wanted to do was harm her, but I forgot my strength, and I thought she didn’t understand how to drink the water.

Now, she probably hated me.

That might be for the best. She needed to forge her own life here. She wouldn’t be able to make it back to her home planet, though I’m certain she would try to find a way, and maybe sink into despair when she eventually figured out it was impossible. But as long as she was safe from the Ghaal, then I would be satisfied.

Maybe these urges that had been building in the pit of my stomach since I had first laid eyes on her and caught her scent on the wind would ease with distance from her.

Only once I knew she was safe, of course.

Despite my hatred of the Ghaal, I would never escape that they were my creators, and as a synthetic organism, designed for breeding. There were elements to my DNA I could never break free from. The pull I felt toward Tori was strong, and I simply couldn’t keep my eyes from her. When I had touched a finger to the blood on her lip, she was so incredibly soft, her lips offering little resistance to my touch. Then something had stirred inside me, sharp and strong, and my urge had been to claim her then and there.I had caught her looking at my cock more than once, and the visual of pressing her against the soft forest floor and penetrating her was a difficult one to shake.

Snarling, I swiped my hand across the ground, lifting a handful of loose leaves. The motion did little to nothing to ease my irritation, but sitting here, now that I had touched her, was not something I could sustain without distraction.

These urges, this animalistic part of me that drove me to breed—to fuck—hadn’t been ignited in many years.I’d come across a lot of female species. But Tori, not only was I certain she was compatible with me, but she was feisty, and I liked how she hid that behind a small and fragile body.

I wanted to take her.

But I was better than that.I was stronger than the animal part of me, and with self-control and the reminder that I needed to care for her and nothing more, I could overcome the part of my DNA that drove me to reproduce.

I was sure of it.

Pretty sure.

After a while, I got up and followed Tori again, keeping my steps silent and blending in with the forest around me.I was a part of this environment as much as it was now a part of me.Adaptive and learning in nature, my skin and appearance had changed, and now I moved as one with my surroundings. If I stilled, I could blend into the forest, and Tori wouldn’t know I was following her.
