Chapter 13 - Grace

I sat on the edge of the bed, dressed in comfortable shorts and an oversized, dull gray T-shirt, clutching the sheets tightly with folded fists as I stared out the window tears rolling down my cheeks.

My hair fell forward and covered my face as I sniffled and wiped my nose. The room was silent, except for the occasional rustling of the curtains in the light morning breeze. It was already dawn, the sun was barely visible, only a few golden rays of sunlight peeking out from behind the white clouds. I heard the rattling of the door handle, followed by a soft creaking.

I knew it was him. He had woken up very early this morning and quietly stepped out to make important phone calls, one after the other.

He entered and closed the door behind him, his scent filling the room. I wiped my eyes so he wouldn't see my tears, but it was already too late. He crossed the room and stood in front of me. The hint of a smile on his lips quickly faded, like chaff blown by the wind, betraying his concern.

“Why are you crying?” he asked, his brows drawn, and his lips pulled in a grim line.

Furious, I got up from the bed and tried to walk past him, but he grabbed my arm and held me rooted to the spot.

“Leave me alone!”

“Grace...” he warned sternly. “Don’t make me ask again.”

I tried to speak, but my voice broke as I tried to hold back the sobs. The weight of everything felt crushing and it was impossible to hold it all in. With a quivering voice, I lashed out.

“It’s your fault, Igor!” I pushed against his chest, burning with fury. “You caused this.

You’ve made my life a nightmare. It’s over; it’s all over. Everything has ended so abruptly for me. Did you think I had planned to get married now? I had my whole life planned out, and this wasn't it — standing in this room bearing the name of a cold-blooded murderer? I’m fucked.”

“What’s your fucking problem?” he growled and shook my shoulders. “Why do you always have to be so infuriating? Why can’t you just accept it and move on?”

“Didn’t you hear what I said, Igor?” I asked, screaming, and hitting my fists against his chest, with more tears streaming down my face. “I’m fucked! I had so many dreams, so many plans... Before I met you, my future was as fucking bright as the sun. Now... Now? I don’t even know what’s going to happen to me tomorrow. Nothing is clear, and it’s all your fault!”

“My fault?” he growled, his deep voice rumbling in his throat. “You got yourself into this fucking mess!”

“Oh, did I?” I screeched. How dare he?The nerve of him!

“Grace...” he ran his fingers through his hair and called my name, but I wasn’t listening.

“I loved traveling,” I continued, my voice barely above a whisper. “I was saving up a trip, and now... I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go. And my degree? Huh? I started something beautiful, and now there’s no hope of ever being able to complete it. What about my mother?”

I broke down into another round of sobs, my shoulders trembling. At the thought of my mother, my walls came crashing down. I missed her so much, it hurt. The thought that I might never see her again made me feel sick.

“What about my mother, Igor?” I cried. “She doesn’t know anything that’s happening right now, and she must be worried sick. I can’t help but think about what her reaction will be when she finds out everything.”

Igor exhaled deeply and yanked me to him, nothing like any embrace we shared before.

“You are mine now,” he said firmly, his hands stroking my back. “You don’t have to worry about anything when I’m right here to take care of you.”

I scoffed and pushed against his chest. “Spoken like a true chauvinist.”

“What’s your fucking problem, Grace?” he grunted, eyes wide like a raving mad lion.

“My problem is you, Igor,” I screamed back.

“Here we go again,” he rolled his eyes, massaging his temple with his thumb.

“No, I need one reason why I should believe that you are here, taking care of me. Give me one good reason why?” my voice rose. “First of all, we both know that I’m not here married to you, because of your undying love for me Last time I checked, you killed my father and brought me here.”

He rolled his eyes. “I didn’t...”

“I am here against my own will,” I said firmly. “What do they call that in your world?

Adopting? Foster care? You fucking kidnapped me, Igor, and you did so because I wouldn’t tell you where the envelope is, right?”
