He placed a hand on his hip, obviously exhausted, and rubbed his temple. “It’s not...”

“It’s not like that?” I folded my arms across my chest. “Are you seriously defending yourself right now?”

“Is this like our first couple’s fight?”

“Seriously?” I asked with wide eyes. “You are seriously making a joke out of this?

Now?”

He huffed and lifted his arms wide, then let them drop to his sides. “You are emotional, I get it. You’re overwhelmed by how fast everything is happening, trust me, I get it. But you have to face the reality now, you are my wife.”

“And after you get your hands on the envelope, what next?” I prodded. “Tell me what comes next? Will I still beyour wife?Or will you get rid of me as soon as I have served my purpose?”

In an instant, his eyes took on a darker shade and he stepped forward.

“Fuck, Grace. You're my wife, do you hear me? There is absolutely nothing you can do to change that. Worrying or fretting about it won't do you any good, so I suggest you accept who and what you've become. I will protect you with my life at all costs, you have my word.”

With clenched fists and gritted teeth, I fumed. “Your fucking word means nothing if I’m still locked up in here like some prisoner!”

He matched my gaze with a cynical look in his.

“Then it’s about time you fucking grow up and stop behaving like this!” he barked and stomped out the door and slammed it shut.

Chapter 14 - Igor

While the engine purred beneath us, I steered my car through the streets. It was quiet and the soft glow of the purple and orange stripes above us gave the sky a picturesque look as dusk slowly fell. I leaned one arm against the window and drove with the other on the steering wheel.

A month had passed and, strangely enough, the feeling of being newly married was not as bad as I had imagined. During all my years in the Bratva, I had never thought of getting married.

But perhaps marrying someone as spirited as Grace made it a little more interesting.

She sat in the passenger seat, her presence a reminder of how both our lives had changed overnight.

“I finally met Bella Varkov,” she piped up, and I glanced at her. She seemed to be in a very chirpy mood. We were on our way home after a delicious dinner at my cousin Vlad's, and she was even more excited after meeting Bella and her children.

“Yeah,” I mumbled flatly. “You had a good time?”

“Mm-hmm,” she nodded, “I did. I know you can’t imagine what it’s like to be a woman married to a mob boss and all, but she can. We go through a lot with you men, you know? She could empathize with everything…”

“Except one thing,” I added with a smirk.

“Which is?” she raised a brow.

I turned my attention to her briefly. “The envelope,” I said, and she smacked her pink lips.

“Here we go again.”

I couldn't help it, I needed to know where it was. It had been gnawing at me, and I couldn't ignore it any longer. I cleared my throat and finally broached the subject, despite knowing how she reacted to it.

“Grace,” I began, my voice tinged with concern, “where did you hide the envelope?”

Her eyes sparkled with a mix of playfulness and genuine interest, as she asked, “Why do you want it?”

I knew she intentionally met my question with her own, to test me and wear me out to stop poking further.

“There is no time for games,” I exhaled. “I need to know where it is.”

“Then first tell me what's in it and why it's so important. I think it's only fair that I know why everyone, you, and Aiden, are trying to get their hands on it.”
