Mom:Hey, sweetie! JSYK, I’m back. I’m so sorry I’ve been caught up with work, but I’dlove to see you. There’s so much I have to tell you. Can we meet up today? I’ll be home later.

Fear gripped me and I looked up to see Igor watching me intently with growing concern.

“Who was that?” he asked, and I clutched the phone tightly.

“It’s my mom. She’s asking to meet up,” I said. “What do I do, Igor? I know I have to tell her everything that’s happened recently but I’m not sure if I am quite ready to meet up with her yet.”

He stepped forward and covered my hands with his, just like he had done the night before. “Remember,” he said softly, “It’ll all be fine. Don’t panic. Maybe I could...”

His words were rudely cut off by his blaring phone. He fished it out of his pockets and glanced at the caller.

“Alexei,” he mouthed and excused himself to answer the call.

When he got back, he looked downcast. “I thought I could accompany you to see your mother, but I have to go. I just got an urgent call from Alexei, and I’m not sure what’s going on.”

I sighed and smiled at him. “I don’t think you have to explain yourself to me, Igor.”

“Maybe not. But I did tell you we will get through this together, and I intend to do everything to prove my words. You should go and meet your mom. Take any car and as many bodyguards as you want,” he said and tucked his phone back into his pocket.

Then, he cupped my cheeks and lowered his head, brushing his lips against mine. My eyelids fluttered shut and I tip-toed to deepen the kiss. I held his hands on my face and stepped even closer to cover the space between us. The kiss was brief, but deep and sensual, and sent a tingle from my toes to my head.

If he kept up with these affectionate gestures, I was going to start getting used to them pretty quickly.

After a few seconds, he broke apart, breathing heavily. He looked more rogue and attractive, with his tousled hair and plump lips. It made me want to kiss him even more. What

was wrong with me? Maybe it was the hormones acting up. Either way, I was beginning to see him in a different light. I shoved the thought aside and smiled at him.

“Thanks for, you know...” I raised my shoulder. “Thanks for supporting me. It honestly means a lot.”

As I watched him disappear behind the door of the bathroom, I couldn’t help but think that maybe Igor was not the evil, bad guy I had pegged him to be.

Chapter 18 - Igor

When I left Grace, I thought the call I had received was work-related, but it turned out to be an unexpected summons to the police station. Alexei drove slightly above the speed limit, throwing occasional glances at me. I knew he was only checking on me, but he didn’t need to worry. I remained unaffected. Police summons didn’t perturb me, except if they got their hands on the document. Now, that would have been a completely different ballgame.

We arrived at the police station on time, but the sterile, fluorescent-lit environment felt stark and unwelcoming, plus all eyes fell on us. In some, I saw fear and intimidation, and I smirked as we were ushered to the interrogation room.

I found myself face to face with the male police officer, John. John was popular around these parts of the city for being a no-nonsense officer, who stood for the law, justice, order, and the rest of that bull crap, but I didn’t give a fuck about his squeaky-clean records or noble cause.

I took the seat across from him while Alexei stood behind me like a bodyguard, lips pulled in a grim line and hands crossed over his pants.

John’s expression was accompanied by a relentless gaze, and it was clear he was determined to uncover the truth. He had a cup of coffee in one hand and the other over the grip of the gun tucked between his shirt and belt. “You know why you are here, Mr. Varkov, right?”

I sat up and adjusted my jacket, crossing a leg over the other as I stared him down. “I know. It’s regarding the minor investigation concerning Connor's death, correct?”

John nodded. “So, I’m going to plead, politely, that you do not waste my time.”

I glanced and the silver watch on my wrist and looked back at him with a smirk on my lips. “If you ask me, officer, I think I have a tighter schedule than you do. So,I’mgoing to request that you do not wastemyfuckingtime.”

The officer wasn’t pleased with my response, but as I said. I didn’t give a fuck. “We have a mutual understanding,” he said curtly.

He began questioning me about my whereabouts on the day of Connor's death. “Mr.

Varkov, there’s proof that you were at Clooney’s the day Connor died.”

I frowned and looked over my shoulder, glancing briefly at Alexei. “Connor who?”

“Don’t fucking play games with me, Igor,” John slammed his hands on the table with gritted teeth, and I laughed.
