Fire erupted from the bouncer’s head, as if someone had detonated fireworks in his brain. He went down like… Well, like a felled tree.

Dar fell beside him, managing to land on his feet at first but the momentum and injuries bringing him to the floor immediately after.

The other bouncer abandoned her position and moved her roots towards Dar.

Emilia rushed to his side.

“The elevator!” Dar growled at Emilia as she neared him, already pushing himself to his feet with claws at the ready.

She hesitated only for a moment. Then she was running across the dead tree’s trunk towards the only way out of this nightmare. She couldn’t help in Dar’s fight, but she sure as hell could press a button.

Only that, the button didn’t light up when she pressed her shaky finger to it. She tried again.

Nothing.

She pressed ten more times in quick succession, the result the same.

The elevator was locked. It had to be.

There is no way out.

She looked back to find Dar, machete in hand, bleeding from numerous lacerations but still finding the strength to fight. She couldn’t see Cubbie from here, but she could hear his aggressive bird sounds and the screams of his enemies.

Her heroes. Her newfound family… Her love.

I never got to tell Dar I’m his. True mate, girlfriend or whatever, I belong with him and he, with me.

That was when two things happened at the same time: Dar’s opponent crashed to the ground with a machete sticking out of her eye, and Cubbie came rolling their way.

A crowd of pissed-off guards and gala guests showed up hot on his tail, a purple devil leading them.

“Nobody shoots, he is mine!” the Baddie barked as he motioned for everyone to stop. “There’s nowhere to run anymore, enforcer.” The last word was spat out.

Dar, now beside Emilia and barely standing, kept his eyes on the countless enemies before them while speaking softly to her. “I said I’d keep you safe and I failed, Lia. But youwilllive. Bargus will find you and Cubbie and free you, I’ve made sure of it. That’s my last promise to you, and Iwillkeep it.”

“Dar…” Tears filled her eyes, her heart aching as though stabbed.

“Stay strong until Bargus comes. Take care of our fur baby… And I hope someday you’ll be able to forgive the Luvian who abducted you.”

Space Lucifer said something from the other side of the room, but Emilia tuned him out. There was only the man beside her now. The one who would give his life for her and for countless creatures he’d never meet, in the name of justice.

“There’s nothing to forgive, Dar. The day you abducted me was the happiest in my life.”

He looked at her then, eyes searching hers.

“It’s the day I found love again… I love you, Dar.”

A shudder went through him, and she caught him before he could crumble to his knees.

Cubbie wined, front paws clinging to her ankle.

“Pumpkin, I–”

“Enough gebawormshit! Seize the Terran, stun the pet, and give me space to shred the enforcer. I’m having Luvian meat for dinner.”

Emilia looked away from Dar and at the armed creatures coming their way. The one responsible for all this stood back with Sivi beside him, a triumphant smile on both their ugly faces.

You’ll get what you deserve, you dickheads. Sooner or later, good always wins.
