Miya couldn’t believe it. Therak was being considerate. Sure, he needed her to pilot him off Xera, but he didn’t need to make her comfortable on the way to the ship. He could have simply tossed her over his shoulder and kept running. Yet here he was, holding her gently in his arms and taking smaller steps to ensure the ride was as smooth as possible.

When he had learned she was in pain, he had taken measures. Therak cared.

Or Miya was seeing what she wanted to see because being carried like a bride on her wedding day made her all mushy inside.

Wait a sec. What if all this time she had been lusting after a married alien? Why had the thought not crossed her mind until now? Being an assassin didn’t mean he was single. He might as well have an entire harem of wives and/or husbands, who knew what his culture was like.

“You know, Thekar… I’m sure you’re a badass at your job, but I think your communication skills need improving. You give me a scare every time you pick me up while we are in the middle of a discussion. Giving me a heads up would be nice.”

“I’ll take it under consideration.” He said it without sparing Miya a glance, but his hold on her tightened a bit.

She smiled inwardly. He was definitely going to take that into consideration, if she was reading this mysterious guy right.

“Communication skills might not be essential in your job–er, ex-job, but they sure are for a successful marriage. Or so I’ve read. No marriages in this busy pilot’s past and present… You?”

A smile tugged at the corner of his lips for the briefest moment. Was it because Miya was as subtle as a blaster shot to a control panel?

“My people do not marry,” Therak told her after a short pause. “Males join a female’s harem if selected by her.”

“Ah… So… you have a harem to get back to?” Please say no, please say no!

“No.”

Yes! “How about a girlfriend from another species? Is there a lady with long head tentacles waiting for you in one of your assassin hideouts?”

“No girlfriend.”

Yes!!

“I do not do relationships.”

Well… crap. “Because of your line of work? I totally get that; my job is a relationship killer too.” Oopsie, pun not intended.

“I do notneedrelationships. I just need to find the one female for me.” Said with a firm tone while scanning the surroundings.

“Aww, that’s sweet. How will you know that you have found the One?”

“I will know.”

The lack of any hesitation whatsoever in his tone made Miya shiver. And immediately gave rise to the thought, could Therak’s soulmate be Miya herself?

Yeah, uh-huh. His honeybunch would probably be a tough-as-nails chick that could kick ass and remain without a single hair or tentacle out of place while doing it. Not some mundane pilot who needed to be rescued and carried around like a damsel in distress.

Ugh, why was Miya even having such thoughts? She was going from wanting to climb Therak like a tree to fantasizing about a relationship with the assassin now? Just great.

Time for a topic change.

“So… what hobbies do you have?”

His brow furrowed. “Hobbies?”

“Yeah, like the things you like doing when you’re not working. You know, to have fun.”

“I don’t do fun.”

“Oh, come on!” She playfully poked him in the pec. “There must be at least one activity you enjoy doing.”Please don’t say you enjoy killing.

“When I don’t work, I train.”
