“Megagull it is, then.”

Miya flashed him a smile then grabbed her full plate the second her stew was fully printed. She couldn’t even remember when she’d last eaten. On the space station, was it?

She excitedly shoved a full spoon in her mouth and… Yup, Birmiang Mining had been assholes when it came to the food replicators as well. Only the shittiest technology for Xera’s colonists. Ugh.

“Come, sit.”

Miya looked at Therak. He was patting the space next to him on the long lounge. He had yet to touch his food, politely waiting for her to join him first.

And she had been stuffing her face while on her feet, too hungry to remember her manners. Mortified, she didn’t move right away.

“Miya, I don’t bite.”

“Yeah?” She suddenly had the irresistible urge to tease him. “What ifIbite?”

His gaze locked with hers. Black swirled into the green debts of his eyes. “Do you?”

Miya flushed. “Um... Depends... Would you... like a playful nip or two?”

His eyes turned entirely black. His pointed ears twitched. “Do such nips bringyoupleasure, Miya?”

His voice had gone deeper and huskier, but just the way he said her name was enough to send a rush of heat through her belly.

“I don’t know, honestly... Haven’t tried with anyone... Are you offering, Therak?”

He visibly stiffened. Then started eating with single-minded focus, his eyes on the burrito as if a moment of distraction would give the meal a chance to escape. “Sit.”

Miya complied but sat close enough for her thigh to brush against his. She was evil like that. “You like it?” she asked breathily.

He went even more rigid next to her. “What?”

“The food. Do you want more of the same? I can give it to you while it’shot.” Galaxies, did she really go there?

Instead of replying, Therak kept wolfing down his meal with frightening determination. His ears were constantly twitching at this point.

Miya sighed. She had to stop with the teasing, she was only making him uncomfortable now that he was no longer teasing her back. But for a moment earlier, she had been sure one more little push would make him take the stoic mask off and pounce on her, half-healed wounds be damned. Sweep her off her feet and carry her to a clean room with a large bed, where he would ravish her with the single-minded focus the burrito had gotten.

Ah, a girl could dream.

“So, like I was saying, Therak, we should get to the command center after lunch–er, dinner. Or is it breakfast?”

“If we have time until nightfall, we’ll bathe.”

“Mmm?” she asked around a mouthful.

“We both smell of blood. Not a good idea with predators around, particularly since we’ve got hours left until takeoff.”

Miya couldn’t argue with that. Having some of his blood on her skin and bralette wasn’t how she wanted to spend their trip on the shuttle either. Finding some actual clothes would be great too.

“Do you think it will be safe to shower in one of the residential buildings? Won’t we risk an attack from the shower drain or something? We'll have only artificial light regardless of which shower room we choose.” At this point, she expected an attack from literally anywhere.

Therak placed his empty plate aside and turned to her. “Now that I know what we are dealing with, I will not be caught unprepared again. You will be safe with me while bathing, Miya. ”

She smiled inwardly at his firm declaration. Was he unnecessarily worried her faith in his skills had wavered after the megagull had bested him?

“You keeping guard at the shower room's door for me would be really sweet. Thank you, Therak.”

Her mother had done the same for her on the moon they had lived on when she had been little. Miya had been terrified of the creepy crawlies that lived in the drain pipes there, and for good reason. They had been the size of her forearm at the age of 5.
