“Why would I guard the door?”

Therak’s words quickly got her wandering mind back to the here and now. “How will you keep me safe while I shower, then?”

There was a flash of fang as he smiled for a heartbeat. “By standing beside you, of course. We'll bathe together.”

Forever the Fatalist

To think that Miya had considered herself evil for overly teasing the guy. With a single statement, Therak sent her ovaries into overdrive, that fangy smile of his revealing he knew exactly what effect his words would have.

Well, touché. But if he expected her to not be distracted and remain focused on the task at hand, he had another thing coming.

While he was finishing an extra burrito in silence, all she thought about was the erotic image of their bodies pressed together under the shower. His bronze skin against her pale one. His hard muscles against her soft curves. His big body caging her petite frame, pressing her against the shower wall…

As they walked several corridors down to the command center, all Miya’s mind was preoccupied with was what would truly happen if they got under the shower. Would Therak simply watch her intensely, face unreadable, eyes swirling with black, ears twitching? Or would he strip her of her ‘useless contraptions’ and personally make sure she was soapy and wet all over? What if he then pressed her against the shower wall so he could slide her up until her wet heat was aligned with his engorged–

“Miya?”

No, he wouldn’t need to use the shower wall for support. Now that he had powered up on burritos to speed up his recovery, Therak was strong enough to lift her until her legs were wrapped around his waist. His powerful forearms under her thighs, he would then lower her down slowly, inch by inch, until she was fully impaled on his stunning co–

“Miya.”

She jumped in place, startled at the quick touch of his hand at the back of her neck. She turned to see him studying her face, standing close enough for his shoulder to brush hers. “What is it, Therak?”

“I want to know the same thing. You’ve been standing in front of this door for some time now.”

Oopsie. “Sorry, I was thinking about… stuff.” Naughty, naughty stuff. “Let’s go in.”

The command center was such a small room that Therak didn’t need to enter first in search of threats. It was clear to see from the entrance that the space was empty as well as in pristine condition. Nothing gruesome to see here, thank the stars.

Directly ahead was a wall with monitors displaying the feed from the security cameras across the station and around the settlement. No sign of life on any of them, Miya saw as she took one of the three seats in front of the main computer.

“This room looks barely used,” she muttered while waking the computer up. “These guys really didn’t take their security seriously. Looks like their first data entry is from just over four months ago. They hadn’t been here long before the tragedy hit… There are two unopened messages fromBirmiang Mining, from this and last month. Let’s see… The assholes are asking for information on how the drilling is going, wondering why the monthly report has not been sent to them. The poor colonists, they didn’t even get to send a distress signal. The attack at the dining hall truly came out of the blue for them.”

“Miya, do not deviate from the task we came here for. Focus.”

She cast Therak a glance. The way he was standing next to her seat said he planned this data check to be over in no time. Could it be that he couldn’t wait to find out if there would be time for a joint shower or not?

But no, Miya had to be projecting. Unlike her, Therak was surely thinking about their survival in case night was coming sooner rather than later.

“I’m trying to be quick,” she assured him. “Still, why don’t you sit while you wait? Don’t overexert your healing body.”

Instead of sitting, he came to stand even closer and put his hand on what Miya was starting to see as his favorable spot. But his fingers did not remain idle on the back of her neck: they alternated between drawing small circles on her skin and massaging the tension out of her muscles there.

If Therak’s intention was to speed things along by helping her relax, he was failing. She never wanted the massage to end. Unfortunately, she found what she was looking for in just a few minutes.

“Got it.”

He stopped with the massage but kept his hand on the same spot as he leaned closer to the image she had just displayed on a holoscreen. “Explain.”

“It’s a day-night cycle map. Here and here,” Miya pointed at the image, “you have the two suns. Up here you see the hour of the day when the suns are at this location in the sky above us. If I shift the hour forward… There! In two hours the suns will still be up. Let’s check what will happen in four hours… Yes!”

“Nothing changed?”

She grinned. “That’s right. No nightfall in the next 24 hours, Therak.”

Meaning they would shower together! Oh, yeah!
