“I’m not sure. Alarms are going off,” I tell her. Instead of talking any longer, I punch in the code and the doors slide open. I shove Eva inside and just as I’m about to close the doors, she stops me.

“Don’t leave me.”

“I need to go see what’s happening.”

“Please, Dom.” With a big sigh, I scrub my hand over my face and walk inside, pressing the button to close the door behind me. The room isn’t small but it isn’t quite a bedroom either. It’s about ten feet by ten feet fitted with a small cot and anything else we might need for an extended stay inside. I’ve had internet and phone service installed in here as well.

Pulling my cell out, I open the camera feeds and watch the guys move through each room clearing it while other parts are cleared by my security team. I don’t see anything on the feed and that alone makes me wonder where the fucking breach is.

“You see anything?” Her hands are balled into the waistband of my sweatpants as she looks over my shoulder. I keep clicking through when I see it. My stomach cramps and Eva gasps. How the fuck?

“Is that?” She doesn’t need to finish because I nod my head just as Vincent and the guys find it outside the back door. Someone knows what I did. Someone knows that I killed Abbigail Nash and her decomposed corpse is now laying on the back steps of my porch. Who knows what I did? How did they find her? Her body was supposed to be buried along where I bury all the others. This doesn’t make sense. None of this does. I can’t believe this.

“I’m going to be sick,” Eva says before gagging and moving for a trash can. I can hear her heaving, but when Vin looks up at the camera, I know he has something to tell me. I zoom in and he steps to the side revealing a note that reads, “Funny the things you find.” I swallow hard unsure how to take all of this. I don’t know who the hell did this and why.

The war has come. I can feel it in my bones and whether I’m ready or not, they’re ready to play with fire.

Evangeline

He makes me study regardless of the fact I don’t want to. I don’t want to know anything about school, but Dom has been out of it a lot lately. He’s in and out of the house more and more and some nights I don’t even know what time he gets in.

Never the less, the tutor shows up and I do my work. Dom made it clear that I will graduate on time if he has any say in it.

He hasn’t figured out who dumped Abby’s body on his doorstep and that fact alone has made him on edge. He keeps this house locked tight and I’m not allowed to leave. He does his best to bring me whatever I need and even tries to plan little date nights with me inside the house. I’ve never had a man treat me the way Dom does. It’s a nice change, but at the same I told him I didn’t want this. I don’t want all the drama that comes with being part of the mafia. So why did I let myself fall for him? Why Dom? I knew what he was when I agreed to be with him, but now it makes me rethink it all. I’m trapped, a prisoner once again.

“We need to talk.” I look up when he storms into the room. The tutor does the same, eyeing him with anger for interrupting while she was in the middle of something. Not that I was listening anyway. I’d zoned out and got lost in my own head again.

“We’re busy,” Destiny, the tutor announces. Dom seems off, scrubbing his hand over his face. Something’s bothering him and I can see it.

“It’s okay. I know what to work on.” My words have her on her feet and leaving before either of us can blink an eye.

“We’re leaving.”

“What?”

“We’re leaving! I said we’re leaving! I need to get some things in order so pack a bag.”

“Where are we going?” I ask taking the chance to be on the receiving end of his wrath.

“Away, Evangeline! Just… go pack!” His words are cold and I jolt when he snaps this time. Turning on my heel, I rush through the house and up the steps not wanting to be near him. First he kidnaps me and now this? Where are we going? I have the right to know.

Ignoring the nagging in the back of my mind, I shove some clothes into a bag when I feel him behind me. I don’t turn to look, just keep packing when his hands slip around my waist.

“I’m sorry,” he says softly. “Shit has gotten to me and I need out of here for a while. I want you safe, Eva,” he says.

“It’s okay. I get it.”

“No you don’t. You didn’t want this and fuck, I didn’t want this for you either. I’m going to fix it. I will.” I spin around to face him and see the saddened look in his eyes and it hurts me. I know he didn’t ask for this anymore than I did.

“Is it because of me?” The one question that has been bothering me since her body was found bursts from my lips.

“Eva,” he says looking away. I reach up and grab his face in my hands, forcing his gaze back to mine.

“Just tell me the truth, Dom.” He nods his head slowly and my stomach tumbles. He’s in this war because of me.

“Look, Eva. You need to understand there was going to be a war anyway. You were sent here with her for a reason. Your father knew one of the families would grab you. He was counting on that.”
