“This came for you. You’re officially a graduate,” he says passing me an envelope.

“My diploma. Dom made sure I was going to graduate,” I say taking it in my hand. It all seems so useless now. What’s the point if he isn’t here to share this with?

“He was smart. He knew you would need it in the future.”

“Did you ever think about it? Having a future that didn’t involve him?” Vin sighs and moves to sit in the chair in front of me.

“In this life, we all know the risks. We know what can happen and what will eventually happen. Losing Dom, that was a blow I wasn’t ready for. He’s my best friend. I never thought that I’d get up in the morning and he wouldn’t be there. I never pictured walking the halls and not finding him in this very office. He was too young to go the way he did,” he says looking down at his hands.

“I hated him when I first met him. I didn’t want anything to do with him. He was everything I thought I was running from. Yet he was different. He was only a kid, like me. The more time I spent with him the more I saw him for who he truly was. Yes, he might have been a killer, but he was more than that. He was an amazing person. I miss him, Vin.” Tears spring to my eyes and I quickly wipe them away. I don’t want him seeing me cry. I don’t want him seeing me as weak before we finish what we’ve set out to do.

“Vincent! There’s something going on,” Roni says rushing into the room interrupting out moment. I wipe my eyes as he looks from me to Vin and back.

“I’m, fine. What is it?” I blurt out.

“The head of the Campezzi family is dead.”

“What?” Vincent is on his feet now, tugging at his hair. “Who?”

“We don’t know. I have guys looking into it.”

“What does that mean?”

“Campezzi was another family. I’m sure you’ve heard the name before,” Vin says turning to face me.

“I have, but I vaguely remember. It was a long time ago.”

“He hasn’t been on anyone’s radar in years. He’s kept to himself, even taking half his shit back to Italy. There’s no reason for someone to want him dead. At least not that I know of,” Vin says.

“This means nothing. We didn’t kill him,” I tell them both.

“Someone did and we need to know why.”

“No, we don’t. We need to finish what we started.” Just as I say that Vincent’s cell phone rings. He pulls it out and raise his hand for us to be quiet.

“Hello?” I listen intently, but I don’t catch anything the person on the line is saying. There’s a lot of cussing coming from Vin though. As soon as he hangs up, he looks to me.

“They know your father is dead. The other families are worried about the two attacks. A few are going underground.”

“No! Fuck, Vincent! His father can’t be one of them!”

“Calm down, Eva. I know where he goes. I know we can get in,” he tells me.

“How?”

“I was Dom’s right hand. I know everything about that family. I’m going to play my cards the right way and get us in. Just trust me on this,” he says.

“I do trust you. Just don’t let him get away from us, Vin. This means too much to me.”

“I know it does. I won’t let him get away, Eva. I promise.”

Days drag by. They are some of the longest days of my life. Calls have been coming in that other Bosses have been killed. No one knows what the hell is going on around here or why it’s all happening. I was set and ready for the kill and now all this is taking over.

“I don’t like this,” Vin says as we sit around the table discussing what’s happening.

“Who the hell could it be?” Roni asks.
