“Anyone. It could literally be anyone. But why? What are they gaining by doing this? These are Bosses that haven’t been relevant in a while now.”

“Maybe they are and we just don’t know,” I add. Roni nods his head, clearly thinking the same thing.

“It’s possible. Hell anything is. I think if we’re moving on Dameco we need to do it now,” Vin says.

“Then let’s do it. I’m ready,” I tell him.

“Tomorrow. Let me make sure everything is clear with the safe house he’s staying at. I know where it is and how to get there. I know the layout, but I want you to be safe, Eva. I won’t let you go in there if I don’t know what’s going on around it.” I nod my head, the butterflies in my stomach fluttering. This is payback. This is revenge at it’s sweetest.

I shove out of my chair and walk up the stairs to Dom’s room, closing the door behind me. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I pull up the only picture I have of him. I took it one night when we were watching TV. He was so engrossed in the show that he didn’t even notice. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as laid back as he was that night.

“You looked happy if only for a minute,” I say running my fingers over the photo. What I miss the most is his bossy ways. The way he used to tell me to do something and then stand there to make sure I followed his orders. Most wouldn’t understand, but I knew that was his way of caring. He needed to make sure that everything was in it’s place.

“You didn’t have to go, Dom. I was ready to give you the time you asked for.” Tossing the phone to the side, tears fill my eyes. I remember that day too. The day he asked me for six months. That was all. I wouldn’t have needed it because I already loved him. A soft knock on the door pulls my attention. I wipe my eyes quickly and say, “come in.” the door opens and Vin walks in, his dress shirt unbuttoned half way. He looks tired, but I know he’s been doing everything he can to get information for me.

“There’s someone on the inside. We don’t know who, but they know too much. They know places, houses, access codes. It’s dangerous, Eva.”

“They don’t know we’re here though right?”

“It’s hard to say. His father’s men found us here. I would assume he’s been keeping tabs on who is in and out of here as well.”

“Then he knows about me,” I say softly.

“I don’t know about that. He could think you’re here with one of us. I honestly don’t know what he thinks, Eva, but we need a new plan. This isn’t going to work. You have to pull back.”

“Like hell I will. I set out to do something and I’m damn sure going to do it! He was your best friend, Vincent! We can’t let them get away with what they’ve done!”

“And I can’t break my promise to Dominic! Don’t you get that? I promised him to protect you if anything happened to him.”

“You did what?” I didn’t know that. I didn’t know they even talked about that.

“I made him a promise, Eva. I can’t break that. Don’t make me break that promise.” I shake my head unsure what to say. I would never ask him to break his promise to his best friend but this is bigger than that. They killed him.

“We were going to be happy. We were getting married and they ruined it all. They killed him. Took his life. He is never coming back, Vin. I can’t back out now.”

“I can’t let you do this,” he says stepping closer to me.

“You taught me to fight and I will,” I hiss.

“Evangeline, come on! Think about it. You can’t go in there. I’m begging you to rethink this.” I shake my head once more, running my hand through my hair.

“I’ve rethought it more than I care to admit.”

“Are you willing to lose me too to get what you want?”

“That’s not fair!”

“It’s true. Any of us could be killed going in there, Eva. Have you thought about that?” I swallow hard and keep my head held high. I don’t want to lose anyone else. I don’t want to lose Vin. He’s the only friend I have left, but I also can’t go to my grave knowing that I didn’t fix this. That I didn’t set out to do what I planned to do.

“I’m sorry, Vincent. You’re either with me or you’re not. I can’t change the plans. They’ve already been set into motion.” He moves toward me, cupping my face in his hands.

“I know how much you want this. I know what this means to you, but its dangerous. There is someone out there that is tearing through the families. We don’t know who that is and I can’t let you get hurt. Do you understand me?”

“Understand this, Vincent. Whatever you think you’re protecting me from? You’re not. You’re making things worse for me. You don’t have the choice or the power. I’m a fucking Dameco now.”

“Don’t throw that in my face, Evangeline. Don’t you dare,” he hisses.

“It’s the only way to get you to listen. Do you think I wanted this life? I hated this life, but they stole something from me. They stole something that I will never get back!”
