“You’re Mafia. That much was evident when you cut Dale’s finger off.” Now he raises an eyebrow, running his hand through his hair.

“And what do you know about mafia?”

“They’re disgusting people. They hurt others.” I keep my eyes on him letting him know that whatever he thinks he’s doing, he isn’t. I wouldn’t let the guys back home intimidate me and I won’t let the likes of Dameco either.

“Is that it?”

“They’re into drugs, prostitution, you name it they do it.” He seems amused by my words, but I know what that world holds. I was raised in it and I refuse to let him walk all over me the way my mother let’s men walk all over her.

“You seem to know it all then, don’t you?”

“What is it you really want, Dameco,” I ask him tired of this little charade already.

“I was wondering where you came from and what the hell you were doing here. It seems my initial thoughts weren’t so spot on. You know far too much to be an outsider,” he says shoving off the dresser and stalking toward me slowly. My heart leaps in my chest, my stomach doing somersaults. “Now I’d like to know who you really are, Evangeline Cevella.” The way my name rolled off his tongue has my cheeks heating. Dominic is in my space, sucking all the air from the room, taking up my sweet oxygen as he leans into me. He reaches up and grabs a strand of my hair, twirling it between his fingers.

“I’m no one. I’m just a girl going to school,” I tell him.

“Is that right? Funnily enough, there are no parents in this house. You occupy the master and your friend is in the guest room. Where are your parents, Eva?” What do I say to that? My father got us this house to live in while we go to school. I should have listened and gotten an alarm, but I didn’t want to. I wanted to be a normal girl and yet this is far from normal.

“That’s none of your business.”

“You showed up in my town, my territory. That makes it my business. Don’t get on my bad side, Eva,” he rasps.

“And if I do?”

“You won’t like the outcome.” His lips are so close to mine now that he leaned in that I can smell the tobacco and mint on his breath. It’s a heady concoction and goes straight to my brain. His lips just barely touch mine and I almost move to kiss him back.

“Don’t get on my bad side and considering that’s the only side I have, don’t cross me.” Just as quickly as his lips were there, they’re gone along with the man himself. He stalks through my bedroom, walking out but leaving the door open and as soon as I hear the front door slam, Abby comes running.

“Did he hurt you? I wanted to call, but I was scared. Maybe this is a bad idea being here,” she rambles.

“Calm down, Abby. He didn’t hurt me. I just saw something I shouldn’t have at that party a month ago.”

“He threatened you?” I lick my lips still able to feel his there and nod my head.

“It wasn’t anything bad. Just to stay out of his business, that’s what I plan on doing.”

“He’s mafia, Eva. Just like your dad. They don’t just walk away and you know it.” She’s right they don’t, but I also don’t think we need to worry about him either as long as I stay out of his way.

“We’ll be fine. You want to stay in here tonight?” She nods her head before both of us make our way to the living room to lock up once more and back to my room. Once inside, we lock the bedroom door and both of us curl up under my blanket.

“Abby?”

“Hmm.”

“I’m glad you’re here.”

“Me too.”

Dominic

“Istill haven’t heard the last from Dale’s father,” my own father tells me. It’s been a month of his whining and groveling. More so trying to get back in the good graces of my father than over his sons missing finger.

“Tell him to get his son some help. He’s snorting all the product he’s supposed to be selling,” I tell him. My father nods his head as we walk along the river. I haven’t been out here in a long time. The river used to be a fun place for us as kids, but now it’s turned into a burial plot. Many men rest at the bottom of the river, their final resting places. I bring the cigarette to my lips and inhale before blowing out the cloud of smoke.

“There are issues arising with the Bosco family.”
