I laughed. “I think that is what Star thinks too! She’s waiting for the photographers to take her picture whenever she leaves the house. She doesn’t go anywhere before she has looked at herself from twenty different angles to ensure she doesn’t look too fat or too old or too poor.”

“Too poor?”

“I know, but shabby chic is a very particular look there. You have to look like you don’t care about money, but actually do have it.”

“How do you do that?”

I explained to him like he was a very dim child. “You get designer ripped jeans, very expensive, couture white t-shirts, that are the purest cotton or silk or whatever. But plain.”

I shook my head. “I know, it’s nuts, Summer explained it to me before we went up there.”

“Summer is a cool kid,” Felix said and I agreed with him there.

We had some wine with our lunch and by the time I made it back to the office, I realized I might as well go home. There was no point pretending I was able to work.

Outside the building, Felix caught my arm.

“I want to ask you something.”

“Okay?”

I thought he was going to ask me about where he could score drugs or which club he should go to, but then he said, “Can I take you out sometime? Maybe tomorrow night? On a date?”

I felt my face going red. He was being so serious, so German about everything. Like we were talking about a dental appointment not a romantic rendezvous.

“Uhm… I don’t know,” I said, to be honest. “Maybe I need to check with Tate?”

I liked hanging out with Felix but I was not attracted to him at all. I also didn’t want to annoy Tate any more than I already might have done. I wanted to hold on to my job as long as possible.

Felix looked away, a bit embarrassed. “Actually, I asked him.”

“If we could go out?”

He nodded.

“What did he say?”

“He thought you had a boyfriend. Do you?”

I wondered why Tate would think that. I’d never spoken about a guy in my life.

“Uhm… no,” I said. “But Tate…” I didn’t finish the sentence, I didn’t quite know what to say.

“There is something between you?”

“No, no, of course not!” I protested a bit much, perhaps. “In any case, he’s seeing someone. Jacqueline from legal?”

Felix shook his head as if he hadn’t heard of her.

“Looks like a Miss Universe,” I said rolling my eyes and he grinned.

“Of course,” he said.

“But I wouldn’t want him thinking that I… you know, flirted with you?” I was blushing again. It wasn’t exactly a topic I was comfortable with.

“Look, I’m only here another three nights and he is busy at the moment. It would be nice to do some fun things. I’m not talking marriage or anything.” He winked at me, “Not yet…”

I felt my cheeks becoming even redder.
