“Why not?” I said. “What do you feel like doing?”

“Let me surprise you,” he said, lifting my hand to his lips and kissing it.

“I’ll pick you up tomorrow evening?”

I nodded.

Then he winked at me again and sauntered off.

I knew I had to tell Tate about this. But what should I say? I didn’t want him to think I liked Felix like that, but on the other hand maybe it would make him a little jealous to know others were interested in me even if he wasn’t. Was this a dangerous game to play? Probably. But I had a feeling that I was already in the game and this was simply my next move.

I texted him: Felix asked me to come out tomorrow night. That ok?

He responded a few minutes later with a thumbs up emoji.

What was that all about?

Chapter 16

Tate

I’ve made dinner, put out plates and call Summer to come down.

She stops as soon as she reaches the table.

“What is that?” she asks suspiciously.

“Lasagna, I think” I say, innocently.

“Made of…?” she puts her hands on her hips.

“Oh, come on!” I say. “Just have a bite!”

She doesn’t move an inch. “Is it vegetarian?”

I nod and only tell her about the lentils to get her to sit down.

She pulls a face like I’ve told her the pasta had been mixed with lama droppings.

“And cheese?”

“This is a great new vegan cheese…” I start.

“Yuck, Dad!” She pushes her plate away.

“Just one bite,” I coax her. I know children can’t stand healthy food but I want to expose her at least to this kind of thinking. Maybe later in life, she’ll remember something her old man said about looking after your body.

She takes a bite and then concedes, “It’s all right. Can I have ice cream now?”

“Ice cream?” I hadn’t put that on the shopping list.

“Evie brought some the other day,” Summer says with a naughty grin. “I hid it in the fridge behind the frozen berries.”

I scowl. Evie, Evie, Evie. Even when I’m alone with Summer, I can’t get away from the girl.

Felix comes down the stairs, smelling like a male perfume counter.

“Ok, guys, I’m off. Wish me luck!”
