Two hours later our car pulled up outside the gated entrance to my family’s Hamptons compound. It was a gigantic property with a mansion that would put most European houses of royalty to shame.
Leo rolled down his window and pushed the button on the call box. I had my window rolled down, too, so I could hear everything.
A disembodied voice crackled over the speaker. “May I help you?”
“I have Mr. Connor Templeton here to see his mother and brother,” Leo announced.
There was a long silence. Then –
“I’m sorry, but neither of them is here right now.”
“Eve?” I said.
She responded with a text: Vincent’s cell phone is here for sure. I can’t find Miranda’s anywhere.
“Leo, drive forward a few feet,” I instructed.
Leo pulled the limo forward so that my window was even with the callbox.
“This is Connor. Let me in,” I ordered.
“M-Mr. Templeton,”the voice said nervously. “We have strict instructions not to let anyone in – ”
“I’m sure they don’t apply to me. Now let me in.”
“I-I’m sorry sir, but I really can’t help you…”
“Eve?” I said.
A text appeared: Already ahead of you.
The gate to the driveway slowly moved aside on its mechanical track.
“Thank you.”
Don’t mention it.
The voice on the callbox was panicked. “Wait – what’s happening? Why did – ”
I didn’t hear the rest since Leo rolled on through and onto the property.
We drove across the massive, tree-lined driveway to the side of the house, where I jumped out the back of the limo.
Bert tried to reason with me. “Connor, you should wait here. Technically, this is trespassing.”
“I was just in prison for murder, Bert. A little trespassing doesn’t really bother me.”
Behind the house lay a field and a man-made pond surrounded by trees. Though it was 300 feet away and I couldn’t make out much else, I could see a figure lying on a reclining chair in the sun. Next to the chair stood a woman in a black dress with sleeves.
“Johnny, you got your gun?” I asked.
“Yes,” Johnny said as he got out of the passenger side.
“Follow me, then.”
Leo got out of the car, too.
