The sun had set an hour before. The limo was almost back to Manhattan, and I was in hell.
I was completely powerless. Lily and Sebastian had both been abducted, and there was nothing I could do. If Eve couldn’t find them, there was no way any of my company’s security guys could – although I still worked the phones relentlessly, talking to my employees, praying for a miracle.
We had just entered the city when a text message pinged my phone.
Connor – I found her cell.
“What?! Where?!”
In international waters near the Grenadines, in the Caribbean.
“Smart,” Bert muttered.
I looked at him.
“She’s out of the jurisdiction of any local police forces,” Bert explained.
“Good. Then she can’t count on them when I go after her,” I growled, which made Bert recoil.
Eve continued, The phone’s signal is super weak, but it’s there.
“Can you see or hear anything?”
No. All I get is blackness and muffled voices.
I looked at Johnny and Bert.
“It’s a trap,” Johnny said. “It has to be.”
“If she’s in international waters, how can there even be a phone signal?” Bert pointed out.
If they’re on a large enough boat, they might have their own miniature cell tower that’s uplinking to a satellite. Or they could be on a tiny island that’s not listed on nautical maps.
“Is it a trap?” Connor asked.
It’s possible that Lily managed to find the phone and activate it… but that would be strange, because she’s not texting or talking to me. So yes… it’s probably Miranda letting you know exactly where they are so you’ll come try to rescue Lily.
I sat there in agony.
It was a trap; it had to be.
Yet I had no choice but to walk into it.
I looked at Johnny. “How would we do it?”
He thought about that for a second. “We could do it a couple of ways. My first choice would be to land on a nearby island and get a local boat to take us out there.”
“Pros and cons?”
“Safest for us – but even in the dark they’d hear us coming a mile away.”
“What’s the alternative?”
“Parachute in and do a scuba approach.”
