He scoffed. “I don’t have that information memorized.”

“I think you do.”

“I don’t. And even if I did, I wouldn’t give it to you.”

“I think you will.”

“Then you’d be wrong.”

Miranda opened the black box just long enough to pull out a small pistol, which she pointed at Sebastian. “I think not.”

Sebastian took a deep breath and tried to be brave, though he winced a little too much – and focused too much on the gun – to be convincing.

“Give her what she wants, Sebastian,” I pleaded.

“No.”

“Sebastian, don’t be an idiot – Connor would tell you to do it, you know he would. Give her what she wants.”

Sebastian drew himself up and for the first time stared into Miranda’s eyes. “I’ve been dealing with bullies all my life, Miranda. People who didn’t like me because I’m gay, people who made fun of me for acting the way I do, people who hated me for being me. After it’s all said and done, that’s all you are, Miranda – a bully. And of all the bullies I’ve ever dealt with, I despise you the most. So go fuck yourself. Bitch.”

I caught my breath. On one hand, it was probably the bravest speech I’d ever heard in my life.

On the other, I was terrified that she was going to pull the trigger.

Miranda looked at him like a scientist again, mentally dissecting him. “I could shoot both your kneecaps. That would probably be persuasive, without being fatal. But then you would be in a great deal of pain, and most probably unable to function, which wouldn’t be ideal for either of us.”

Sebastian trembled slightly, but didn’t answer.

“So I think I’ll just do it to her,” Miranda said, and swung the gun over at me.
