I stared at the cell phone and frowned. “I don’t understand.”

“Your gay mascot does,” Miranda said.

Sebastian gave her a death-glare. “Miranda’s telling them where we are. Connor’s probably setting up a plan to rescue us right now.”

“I understand that,” I protested. “But why is Johnny so important?”

“He’s the one who’ll lead it. He was Special Forces – he’ll know exactly how to do it.”

My eyes bugged out. “You think Johnny’s coming here?”

Sebastian looked grim. “Not just him.”

It took a second for that to sink in. When it did, I wasn’t sure whether I was thrilled or horrified.

“Connor, too?!”

But I didn’t need him to answer to know the truth. I remembered all the training he and Johnny had done in the months since the assassination attempt at the Dubai.

Without knowing it at the time, this was the moment Connor had been preparing for. And since my life was at stake, there was no way he was going to let Johnny come alone.

The only problem was, Miranda knew it, too.

“I guarantee it,” she said. “And my men will be ready for him.”

“If you wanted him dead, why didn’t you just get Armin to kill him a year ago?”

“Because I didn’t want him dead,” Miranda said. “I wanted him to suffer.”

“You sicced the Aryan Brotherhood on him when he was at Rikers.”

“Because your little friend Eve found the limousine, which was going to clear him. If that had never happened, I would have happily let him rot away in prison for the rest of his life.”

“For a crime he didn’t commit.”

“Of course. That’s what made it so much fun.”

She seemed so calm, so blasé about destroying our lives. I wanted to kill her.

Instead, all I could do was try to piss her off, maybe goad her into making a mistake – although what that might be, I had no idea. “That was a pretty big fuck-up on your part. Didn’t you tell your thugs to destroy all the cell phones?”

She regarded me coolly. “They were planning on letting the water do that. No one anticipated that the driver might have a waterproof case.”

“Guess they should have.”

“The responsible parties have been dealt with.”

“What, did you murder them, too?”

“Enough talk.” She pressed a button on the arm of her chair. Seconds later, Armin walked in with a laptop, set it in front of Sebastian, then left and closed the door behind him.

Sebastian looked at the computer, then at Miranda, mystified. “What do you want me to do with this?”

“I’m going to need every password you know, for every bank account Connor has, and every security system in his company. You’re going to log into them while I watch.”
