Johnny was as good as his word. We were standing on the tarmac loading our gear inside of three hours.

Five of us were standing by the plane: me, Johnny, Bert, and my two remaining bodyguards, Juan and Leo. Four of us were going. But I had to give them one last chance to back out.

“You don’t have to do this,” I told them. “I’ll pay you handsomely if you do – three million dollars apiece, and that goes for you, too, Johnny – but I’ve got to tell you, there’s maybe a ten percent chance we come out of this alive.”

“Twenty percent at least,” Johnny said in a deadpan voice. “Don’t be pessimistic.”

“No matter what, it’s still shitty odds. You can walk away now and I won’t say a thing.”

Leo shrugged. “Danger’s part of the job. I’m going wherever you’re going.”

Juan grinned. “I was a Navy SEAL, sir. Frankly, this job’s been pretty damn boring till tonight.”

“You people are insane,” Bert muttered.

“A good time with a three million dollar payday?” Juan asked. “That sounds pretty sane to me.”

“The fact that you regard this as ‘a good time’ proves you are certifiable,” Bert said dourly.

Juan just laughed. “Naw, that just proves I’m a SEAL.”

“Load up,” Johnny said, and he and the two bodyguards boarded the Gulfstream jet.

“Connor, I’m begging you – don’t do this,” Bert said. “Let somebody else go after them. Somebody who’s trained for this sort of thing.”

“Who? You yourself said that Miranda must have chosen international waters so that she’s out of jurisdiction of any local police force. And there’s no way we can get the US military out there in time.”

“You got the White House to have the FBI do the forensics on the limo. Can’t you get them to send a raiding party out there, too?”

“I think I’ve used up all my campaign contribution favors. Plus, do you really think we’re going to be able to convince the United States military to go out on a raid based on the say-so of an internet hacker, using illegally acquired intel? Because that’s all we’ve got.”

Bert gave me a look. “You trust Eve?”

“Absolutely.”
