“Frankly, I didn’t think we’d even make it this far, so why bring up one more thing for you to worry about?”

“Why are you so chipper about all this?” I asked Johnny.

“One thing you learn in Special Forces is that if you make it 90% of the way through a suicide mission, be happy for that much.”

“This was a suicide mission?” I asked, stunned.

“Pretty much,” Connor conceded.

I started crying. Then I kissed him passionately on the mouth, cradling his face in my hands.

He smiled as soon as I pulled back. “That made it all worthwhile.”

“If we make it back, I’ll make it even more worth your while,” I promised. He laughed.

“What do you mean ‘if we make it back’?” Johnny scoffed. “We survived Miranda; sharks are a piece of cake by comparison. They’re just big fish.”

“Have you ever seen Jaws?” I asked him nervously.

“I said no great whites,” Johnny reminded me. “Mostly just reef sharks and blacktips. I bet you we don’t even see a single one.”

“Maybe we should get going instead of waiting around for them to show up,” Connor suggested.

As we started swimming in the direction of the island, Johnny playfully poked me in the side. “See? Now you’re not even thinking about how far of a swim it is.”

I shot him a look. “That’s really reaching for a silver lining, Johnny.”
